Has anyone simply opened up a stock exhaust and altered the inside for a better sound? There is plenty on here about tubi and stebro etc but can you make a difference to your exisiting exhaust with just the bits it comes with? Would be interested in your opinions, I know they are tuned when made etc, but is the loss of a few horse power anything to worry about? Thanks in advance.
jon i think it's a waste of effort if your talking about 308 exhaust .... theres not much to them exept a lot of weight........ i fabbed a complete st/steel system up couple months ago was not that hard if you buy all the bend and cut them to suit.......... stock muffler and plumbing no cats comes in at 25 KG new muffler and pluming about 10 KG and the look and sound awesome .......... i have one half completed exhaust system i made for my mates car but looks like he has sold his car so he will not need it if anyone is interested drop me a line Image Unavailable, Please Login

I did the same in my 308, took a standard Magnaflow and built my own system. It was wild and quite loud, almost too loud. I was stopped a few times for a loud exhaust. Luckly there aren't too many Ferrari's in town so I was able to talk my way out of it, you know "what can I do it's a Ferrari and it's louder than a standard exhaust system" the Sheriff I think knew I was full of s*** but we had a good conversation. The system was not that hard to fab up and while I couldn't tell a performance difference I did like the sound.
The nice stainless standard box contains a whole lot of mild steel pipes and baffles. I bet on most cars the insides have rotted away to some degree. On mine the whole stock system is ripped out, replaced by 8X equal tracts into 2 into 1 each side, small resonator each side and 4 out the back. Yes, it is very loud, but man, you should hear it at 7,500rpm! It's a GTS, so the radio has become totally obsolete.
Well I decided to do something. I ordered some parts from a exhaust company these came to about £ 85.00. Bends, flanges, two silencer boxes. I then started to cut and fit the collection of bits until I ended up with something that that looks about ok. I purchased an old exhaust from ebay (£50.00) which supplied me with a set of ferrari tail pipes which I welded on the end. I can keep my old exhaust as is. Made a bracket welded all together and here is the mark 1 result. Not bad I think. The noise is great nice and deep and yet not in your face. It is the tone I have wanted and total cost less labour under £ 200.00 I have hyperflows on for the CATS. FIrst time I have tried but the sound file should be on you tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNR4MYMTOfM Image Unavailable, Please Login
I saw/heard a similar system on a Boxer using four SS Cherry Bomb type glass packs...it sounded GREAT!
