It happened again for me last night, it's probably happened 3 times in the past couple of weeks. ITS SCARY ****. If you don't know what it is, basically when your falling asleep or waking up, your mind wakes up but your body doesn't. So your basically awake, but your body is paralyzed. It felt like it lasted a couple of minutes, but it's that feeling that someone is attacking you and you can't do anything about it. Anyone else experience this?
Used to happen to me all the time. I've had some interesting experiences to say the least... It hadn't happened in a long time though until earlier today, so it's a bit odd that I saw this post. Can't say I particularly enjoy it. Did you have visuals with the anxiety/being attacked feeling? Those are the worst. -R
Sleep paralysis is a very common phenomenon that in litterature is called incubus or sucubus depending on what gender you are. What it means is that a demon is having sex with you against your will. =))) From a modern medicine point of view, it's simply a glitch in your neural network, probably brought about by fatigue and/or stress. It happened to me once in the early morning when bright. I remember a very curious feeling and wondered what was going on.This is probably more unsettling when happening at night. I can certainly understand the scary feeling. It sounds like you are due for some r 'n r. That should probably clear up any tricks your mind is playing on you. -Peter Oh
Yes, its no big deal although its scary 1st time it happens essentially it is a mechanism developed by primates millions of years ago so that while we slept up in trees we wouldnt fall out & get eaten by a leapard If you are interested in more info send me a PM, I have tons of research on this
Happened to me a week or so ago - hasn't happened in a while...thought I heard voices in the other room at 3 am, tried to get up...frozen solid. Tried to yell out, wasn't sure if I was. Finally shook myself out of it...took a minute or two. It's kind of creepy, scary and kind of cool all at once. RMX
it happens to me when i'm really tired or worned out. sometimes, just to wake myself up and rise up, my heart beats like a drum. and yes, sometimes, it's scary.
You might as well make the best of it when it happens Its the best place to launch into lucid dreaming where you are conscious in your dream and you can do whatever you want Pretty trippy stuff and fun too
I noticed this was very location based for me. Used to get it all the time in my old apartment, and haven't gotten it since I moved. It was very scary at first and I felt like there were demons in the room. But once you realize what is happening, it is less scary - although frustrating that you can't move. I agree with William H...lucid dreaming is one of the most amazing things I've ever experienced. I have a friend that did a lot of reading up on it and can do it at will now if he goes through the right "pre-sleep" steps.
All 3 times that it happened seemed like someone was attacking me. I think it's been location for me as well since the first couple of times it happened was at my home when I came back from school, then yesterday it happened here at place after staying in pasadena for a week and half.
I knew someone that had a lot of problems with that. I don't know what resolution she got to the problem as I've lost touch with her, but last I heard she wanted to do a sleep study but her insurance wouldn't cover it. I sort of have the opposite thing happen. I'll think I'm awake and imagine awful things and swear I'm awake in my bed and see them, but really I think I'm dreaming or just maybe partially awake. I know I have actually screamed out loud though.
Happens to me from time to time. I also believe that it is stress induced as it is generally around the times that I am rather stressed out. It is the worst helpless feeling that you can have.
Never had this happen. As a matter of fact I dont think I have ever heard of it before here. But.... I did have a strange thing happen years ago. I must have been dreaming but when I woke up I had no idea what it was about. Couldnt recall anything, but I shook like a leaf for about a half hour. Couldnt control it at all, just kept shaking alot.
It happened again this past week, haha, but I was able to realize what was going on and just crashed out. Now it seems lately I've been dreaming of my jaw locking and its about to break. Freaks me out as if I am about to break my jaw. I'm not the best sleeper haha anyone else experience this?
Interesting comments on sleep paralysis, beginning with post #22 http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=161870&highlight=Sleep+Paralysis&page=2
hee hee LMAO...... edit : very cool link. my house was built in 1942, a good solid house. as far as weird things.... i dont want to talk or type about it.
Funny you say that. I was freaked out the first time I experienced sleep paralysis, then realized the enjoyment of lucid dreaming and was fine with it from then on.
Not sure if it's exactly the same thing, because my thought process was obviously not working properly, but...a couple of years ago, a fan fell over while I was sleeping. I heard it hit the floor, then my dog briefly went bananas barking at it. She was also growling, as if facing down...facing down what? What the hell was at the foot of my bed?? Holy **** what is it? I figured it must be a mountain lion (in Central Texas, of all places). I was paralyzed with fear. I thought that if I screamed and waved my arms around, I might be able to scare it off, but I couldn't move. It was like being tied up. I wanted to move but my body wouldn't do anything. Finally I "broke out of it" and managed to scream like a banshee. Then I realized it was just the fan. My mom was visiting. That had to sound really weird from downstairs. LOL. It was really weird though.
I've had this happen to me lots of times, especially when I'm really tired. These days I just go like "Oh damn, might as well go back to sleep".
Yep that's sleep paralysis all right. Typically involves feeling of trying frantically to move but can't, some weight or pressure on your chest, feelings of dread like something really bad is happening, feeling like you're not breathing, hallucinations, etc. Kinda sucks actually.
I had an episode of sleep paralysis last night. Felt like I couldn't move. I first determined I was still breathing, and it wasn't a "being attacked" dream so I calmed down. Then spent what felt like 15-20 seconds trying to move and yell, but couldn't make anything happen. I was making a muffled sound in my head only. Then I "shocked" myself awake by focusing on waking up, and my eyes opened and I gasped air in. I was lying on my back, which I never do in normal sleep. I propped up and asked my wife if I was yelling, she mumbled no. I don't remember having anything like that before.I have had a lot of nightmares where I wake myself up on purpose... I can still remember some of them vividly and how I woke myself intentionally, which self awareness still surprises me.
