Last fall the PCA here in New Mexico had an event where we all gathered at one of our long time members and Porsche enthusiasts. Later in the afternoon as a surprise he opened his garage for a viewing of his unrestored 904, one of the rarest 904's ever built and with a provenance of Porsche racing history. The car is not for sale as I am aware as he plans on restoring it. The garage is a classic , I couldn't prop it for a film any better than it is now........Enjoy a piece of history.

Amazing car for sure. I remember the owner stating that the car had a racing provenance including Le Mans. Dan Gurney had raced the car as well. Sorry, I don't remember all the details of the car but I know it's extensive. I was too busy trying to get a few pics and picking my jaw off the ground. I'll try and find out more details in the Spring when we all get together again. Just out of curiosity I wonder what this little beauty is worth? He did mention that to restore it correctly it would take over 100K. Here's a couple more pics I snagged that day.

    damn !!!!!!!!!!!!

About four to five years ago, my wife sent me to the supermarket, to buy bread and milk. What the heck, I pick up a classic car auction rag, that gives the results of several recent auctions. I flip a few pages. I can't believe it, some guy commited a crime, and found a 904 or 906, for an unbelieveable price. Apparently, the p.o., entered one of these cars without reserve, in the wrong auction. It was not a P-car or exotic car auction.

The car was sold for around 150K - out the door. Few had interest in the car. It was a nice running car, that was never a cripsy critter.

    Beautiful car !!!!!!!!!!

    Congrats.

One of my all-time favorites. I hope you can post pictures of any progress he makes.

Not to bee too discouraging, but my guess is that he'll need more than $100K for a proper restoration, unless he himself is both a wiz at overhauling Carrera motors, and a fiberglass expert. But the car will be worth big money when he's done, so it'll probably be worth the expense!

Fantastic. Is the tape on the headlights in the pictures of the first post the same tape as the tape on the headlights in the pictures of the last post...?

Any idea on the car's current condition...? Does it run...? Has it been driven recently...? Or is it a veritable time capsule from the last time that it was on the track...?

Thanks for posting the pictures - the 904 is definitely up there as far as beautiful cars.

Wow, Jerry thanks............do you know the Dr. or any more of the cars history?

The pics I took at the Dr.'s. residence were just about three months ago so I doubt anything has really been done to the car since then, the engine and tranny are out and in pieces and it looks as if there is a lot of work to be done to make it a runner in the near future. Running or not it is a piece of sculpture.
As a side note when I was racing in the late seventies there was a guy named George in San Diego that had a blue 904 that he tracked at Ca. SCCA tracks such as Riverside, Holtville and Laguna Seca, etc. I designed the Porsche calendar one year and included his car in it........at the time the car was like a spaceship......simply beautiful.

Agreed. It's too bad no one maks a good 906 replica. I actually like that body a bit better than the 904.

Thanks for posting. Love the 904. I was going to see Chuck Beck last year but time wouldn't allow it. He was very nice to me on the phone though. I had heard that they were event eligible in some groups. I have since decided I would rather spend more money for a no excuses car eligible for a lot.

BTW Chuck says some other cars are faster at first (think Cobras, older turbos and the like) but then the little air resistance lets him retake them at speed. He also mentioned though that at that kind of speed the car lifts.

PS. His son's car makes quite a bit of HP out of a naturally aspirated engine I believe.

Just found a pen and ink illustration I did for Road & Track and a Porsche calendar in '78'. It was as previously mentioned one of the PCA members cars from the San Diego regeion named George. Geez! 30 years ago.
