Wild exchange rate fluctuations and real estate crash have depressed the pound and value of supercars in the UK to unprecedented levels I think. There is no arbitrage to US or EU due to RHD setup but anyway, how does this sound (prices from December 08 and falling):

    2005 612 Scaglietti for USD 110k (82k EUR) or
    2006 F430 Spider for USD 104k (EUR78k)
    1997 550 Maranello for USD 39k (EUR29k)

These are random examples from respected marketplace - British Car Auctions. No partucular stories related to either of the cars.

This doesn't help the local UK population as the exchange rates don't affect their buying behaviour. However, for any US/Euro purchasors of LHD cars, the UK offers great bargains - e.g. F40s at $350k...

What a change from the days that UK buyers used to pay around 30-40% more for any car compared to europe, let alone US......

Ferraris are inexpensive in the UK but remember when you import them into the US you have to pay tariffs. Not to mention the car has to conform to U.S safety and emission standards. Modifying the cars to these standards is going to defeat the purpose of buying from abroad.

don't import them; buy one and leave it there, enjoy it when you visit. may not work for all cars, but for the ridiculous prices F50s are going for in the US, you can get a euro F50 AND a house for the same price.

Remember, too, most of those cars are RHD. Not the F50s, of course. At least I do not think so.

yes of course part of the price weakness is due to the limited market for rhd cars in europe. but i definetely will be considering buying an f40 in the uk and just registering at my uk address. only consideration there is that it would oblige me to go back to the uk every year to get the mot done...oh well.

How long ago was that? UK has been cheapest in western europe (not counting countries like bulgaria etc, no idea how much cars go for around that area) for a number of years now. Countries like Holland and Spain are insanely expensive car wise because you have to pay tax on just about everything. And then more money for more tax (but renamed so it doesnt sound like tax, lol).

the 550 maranello for 29K euro is one that was going through an auction not to long ago IIRC, but didnt have any paperwork anymore. Highly risky with a car like that. I'd rather spend 10K more for one with a clear history.

Where is the 599 for 120k, PAV?
UK was/is known as RIP OFF Britain for many many years. Americans would not believe the prices for stuff there, even compared to Europe. How about electronics (eg Dell stuff at 4X the price? even though they were made in Ireland?)? Whisky from Scotland being cheaper in Japan? and the list went on and on. On average for most stuff (electronics, clothes, shoes,etc..), I would estimate the US prices were half, or even less than half the UK prices.
In the UK, some item categories were more expensive, due to stupid taxes (fuel, booze, tobacco) etc, but everything else, was expensive since people paid for it, regardless.
The current situation of "cheapness" is only due to the strange currency exchange situation at present. As re cars, this effect plus the crisis, means there is tons of exotics out there, with out of work owners etc, which is leading to the pricing we see.
Wonder how long before retailers/manufacturers etc start turning on the screws on the Uk consumers again?

RE Bas Jaski post above: The last couple of years prices got a bit better, but ask anyone how a few years ago, so many people in UK were personally importing their cars from Europe, for 30-40% cheaper. EU fined VW a hell of a lot of millions, since their mainland european dealers were refusing to take orders for RHD cars, in breach of EU regulations.
In france, a lot of dealerships, dedciated themselves solely to selling cars to UK visitors! Holland and belgium were popular also; ironically UK made MGs and Rovers, were bought a lot there, being so much cheaper!

I don't think I'd regard the above prices as typical eg the 550 through BCA was a finance reclaim with no service history and high miles, if the other prices were from the auction house then the stories are likely the same

Though it has to be said the £ is in the guano presently (at least until the Euro starts to slide to reflect a more realistic position) and LHD cars are very cheap by comparison

I'm not aware of a £120k 599 but there is an 11k mile Car about for £147k advertised so probably £142k for cash

History repeats itself. In the early 80s RHD Daytonas were so cheap you could convert one to LHD, import it to the states, convert it for DOT and still be ahead. Problem was finding a really good Daytona with no rust issues. I was quoted 4500 pounds to convert a really nice silver 72. Had just sold my 308 GTS and should have done it.
