If you can race an XJS then why not the 400?

I'd say....because the XJ-S was the best thing Jaguar had at the time. With Ferrari, why choose the 400i when you could use a 308? Ferrari by that point was really out of production car racing it seems. Sure, cars were raced, but it just wasn't the same as before. Ferrari had moved on to purpose-built racing machines by this point.

People have even raced RR in the Dakkar or Bentley Turbo R on the track. For the 400i it would have to have been a private-semi crazy-entry :)

Ferrari should have put a NASCAR team together back in the 70's! :D The 365/400 would have been awsome against the Monte Carlo's and Thunderbirds of the day!

There was an IMSA (International Marijuana Smugglers Association) Rolls Royce raced by the owner of "Filthy Mcnasty's" an LA strip club. Also, there was a Mercedes 450SL.

Sorry, just had to add my 2 bits.

    Doug,

Please tell me you are not contemplating a 400 track car project.

    Regards,

Just thinking about the costs of repairing the bodywork on a 400 (has to be carb cars only, even in 2008!) after all of that "rubbing" every race makes my head spin! That cost alone would probably fund 3 of the good ol' boy teams!

At least one 400 has been raced the UK Owners' Club race series. I have some pictures but not immediately to hand. It was fairly competetive (against 308s etc.) and hugely entertaining to watch.

You are right. We once had supper with the driver and his exploits were entertaining for both driver & crowd.
Looked great fun with that V12 full of torque !
