So my family just acquired some hours through Marquis Jets. The hours are suppost to go towards a Hawker 800 or anything below that. We did our first flight this past weekend to Vegas for the CES show. We show up at the airport and much to our surprise we see a Citation X. We first thought it wasn't ours but when we pulled up the pilot said "Tandon Party" we said "yes" and he said "please pull forward, so we can load your bags.". I was like holy ****! Apparently what happened was they didn't have the Hawker ready and this was the only plane available. We board that plane and go on our way. Flight time from Van Nuys airport to Las Vegas, 25 minutes with some air traffic. All I have to say is WOW! an amazing plane.

Nice! There were two Citation Xs across from Eppley Airport here and I could not stop looking at them!

The X is a great airplane. I used to be an engineer for Cessna and did a fair amount of system development and flight test work on the X. It is very cool to be up at FL510 at .9M. If the sunlight was at the right angle, you could see the shadows of the standing shock waves on the wing where the airflow was transonic. When the X was undergoing certification flight tests, it was so fast that the only chase airplane Cessna could find to keep up with it was Charlie Thornton's civilian T-38 (same T-38 that was used in the Dragnet movie with Dan Ackroyd and Tom Hanks).

Since you were an engineer for Cessna, I wanted to ask you a question. I was speaking to the pilot before we took off about the airplanes performance. He mentioned the Mach.9 was restricted speed. Apparently the onboard computer will not allow it to go past .9 and it only uses 65 percent of its maximum performance. He said the plane is capable of doing Mach 1.5 or even greater. Is this true?

I suspect the X would go supersonic pretty easily in a dive, but I'm not sure about straight and level. When you start getting up there speed wise, the engines start to do funny things as well-- inlet design is critical, and I don't know if the X has the right inlet design or not.

I'm not sure about the X, but during testing, all of the Falcon models have gone supersonic. The engines flame out, so it's not something you want to do every day, but the airframe is just fine.

The critical part of going supersonic is the trans-sonic regime (Mach 0.9 - 1.1, I believe). Once you get past that, it becomes just a matter of having enough thrust and not too much drag.
