    Thanks Armen.

The man who drove it 11,000-odd miles in 5 years spared no expense in maintaining the car as he does with all his Ferrari Supercars. Well-maintained...

What is up with the electrical system - at least 3 or 4 alternator replacements or overhauls?

Yes, I noticed that too. After installing an OEM alt, 20 miles later it gets replaced again. Overall I would think the running costs would have been higher. I've read of 308's that had higher service totals.

Just a guess,... if the cam cover seals leak, the oil drips on the alternator.... ask me how I know...

My car was bullet proof... only 2 non-maint issues ( a cam position sensor failed, which shuts down one banks ecu) and the leak in the cam cover gasket, taking out the altenator.

until the altenator, my wifes 2003 volvo cost more to service than the F40... (no joke. and the volvo only require rotine maintenance)

Well maintained and the mechanics could not figure out what caused premature alt failure?

The car is well-maintained. Lets not make out this car has any issues, unless you are personally in a position to do so with first-hand authority.

Let me address this car's maintenance history as an F40 owner myself.

The suggestion you've made that this car has had "3 or 4 alternator replacements" as you put it is wrong. The alternator was replaced just once.

If you examine the car's records properly, you'll see that this car had its first alternator overhaul when it was 13 years old (!) at somewhere between 9,210 miles and 12,864 miles. Sounds very reasonable for an Italian racecar-for-the-road. Frefan and Simon (also F40 owners) have hinted at what causes an F40s alternator to fail with some cars. However, although Im familiar with this common issue, Ive been fortunate in that none of mine have suffered the same malady in the course of thousands of miles so I know not all F40s are subject to this.

When the car was 15 years old at 15,111 miles, some 4,000 miles later, the alternator was "serviced". You'll notice that at the same time, the aforementioned cam cover gaskets were an issue and remedied. Looks to me as if they DID in fact figure out what was causing the alternator issue. Premature? After 15,000 miles and 15 years? No.

At 15,357 miles, the owner decided to "purchase" an OEM replacement alternator in anticipation of the need to replace the one which had serviced this car for 15,000 miles and 16 years. Sounds like a reasonable course of action.

At 15,378 miles said replacement alternator was installed, replacing the original unit.

The original alternator is now enshrined in the owner's Old Parts Hall of Fame for extended faithful service.

PS- I have zero affiliation with this car, although I know the previous owner, and lets just say he does not try and run his cars on a shoestring budget. His cars are well-maintained.

When I bought my car the previous owner just had the car completely serviced, with a complete belt service from a Ferrari dealer. I later noticed a small drop of oil on the garage floor, and so I sent the car to an expert mechanic (David Helms) to get an opinion about the leak. As it turns out, when the dealer did the belt service they used a lot of silicone on the cam cover gaskets, and when they tighten the covers, the silicone squishes out and causes the ends of the seals to push out also, which causes them to leak. But the seals are supposed to be installed dry, not with loads of goop, and this is a very common problem with inexperienced dealers. Another problem is the dealer cut the cam seals and superglued them back together. I guess this is a shortcut dealers learned over the years so they don't have to remove the cams.

Needless to say I had David completely redo the entire major service. I had no confidence in the dealers work. David found the above issues, and the fix was very time consuming as he had to chase down all the silicone using some expensive medical tools to make sure that none of the drain holes had any silicone in them. Fortunately I noticed this after only 100 miles and everything was fine.

David noticed some oil had dripped onto the alternator, and while mine had not gone out, he said that if we had not addressed the problem properly (and promptly), then it most certainly would have gone out.

As a side note, I see a lot of times when these cars are for sale, most of the ads mention the car has recently had a 'complete major belt service, etc'. In my case would have preferred that the seller just discount the car by the estimated service cost and let me send it to my own mechanic, since the 10k he spent was wasted anyway. I added another 10k or so to that and had the service done properly, by a more experienced mechanic, and had some other items inspected/cleaned/adjusted while he's in there and has the manifold off. This is the second F40 I have purchased, and the first one also had a shoddy very recent 'major service'.

    sorry for the long rant

I have long been interested in a F40 and would get serious at a price within reach. Seems that every time I get close, the prices slip away. I am optimistic that prices may be converging on my means, if my means stay steady in 2009.

I was not trying to malign anyone; my comment was driven by the paperwork. I saw an alternator service in 2007 and replacement the next year. That seemed premature to me. I am not sure how I could divine from the records the owner's desire to replace a functional alternator with new OEM. I service my cars well, too, but generally replace only non-functional items and therefore assumed the alternator was not functional. In fact, for my collector cars I strive to keep all components original, prefering a rebuilt to replacement part, as serial numbers and date codes can be important on every component or a car subejct to judging. Perhaps that is not an issue on a F40.

It seems like a nice car overall that at least has transparency instead of mystery to it.

I'm sorry that I didn't notice this thread before -
I'm happy to report the sale of 1992 F40 # 91912. I sold it to it's current owner in Florida (for Jim Spiro) in April of
2007 and then that owner contracted me to sell it again for him in 2008. It had a great visual inspection and then
a very successful PPI. It is a wonderful and well maintained car as many of you have indicated.
The new owner has a significant Ferrari collection and is located on the East Coast. Not all F40's have
4000 miles and the new owner actually drives his cars so I'm sure that he will love this one.
