Circuit City is closing up, if you have a gift card to Circuit City, go use it.
Once they are gone, the gift cards are going with it.

Sad to hear 34,000 people will not have jobs :(

Due to challenges to our business and the continued bleak economic environment, Circuit City is going out of business and the company's assets will be liquidated to pay off creditors.

Another reason why gift cards are a bad idea for gift giving. To me, it's no better than giving cash as a gift. In fact, I consider it worse since it ties you down as to where to shop not to mention fees to keep your account open after a number of years (in some cases) on top of bankruptcy.

I doubt it, they are still doing "well" considering.

Is anyone surprised CC went under? They've been closing stores here for months now.

    I feel little sympathy.

Their problem was that they were customer un-friendly. Pricing games, pushing people hard on junk warranties, bad selection of product, lying sales people, overbearing return policies and more.

Good riddance to them and to their employees.

Both CC and BB suck(ed) but I found my self buying more often in CC due to better prices in certain electronics.

I don't feel for CC as it was lousy company anyway.

Service contracts are handled by a third party, so they should not be impacted by CC going under.

This is true, CC thought that it would be a GREAT management idea to take all of their trained sales associates who cared about what they were doing and had a clue in their head about the product that they were selling and fire them all and replace them with lesser paid associates (emphasis on the first three letters) who could give an 'F' about customer service, the company or the product that they were selling. Great business model...GO Circuit City. Best Buy isn't much better in my opinion.

Here's an article from a couple of years ago: http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/retail/2007-03-28-circuit-city-layoffs_N.htm

Note to self: Hire well, train well and pay well...got it

I need a new DSLR...I saw a guy on the corner today holding signs saying "Circuit City Liquidation - Up to 30% Off!"

Think I should give it a few weeks?

Go with B&H photo or Adorama to buy one. CC will be jacking up there prices before they cut the prices. I went to one of the CC stores in St. Louis that was closing and all the prices were jacked up.

Thanks. I knew they brought in third parties for the liquidations, didn't know they brought in fake merchandise.

I just got back from the one near me on University Parkway. It's about 4 months old. It was a madhouse but the prices totally SUCKED on cameras...and other stuff.

I worked at circuit city during college and my first year after graduation.

I could never sell the stuff with the highest markup because i'd always look for the best value and try to lead customers to those items. I'd always have more sales and volume per sale than the others in my department but sold the stuff with the least markup. I'd get written up and talked to by management for not selling enough protection plans. To make things worse you'd make more on selling the protection plans than the item itself. After seeing people get returns for free if they complained enough and others getting shafted and charged for replacement items even when they had the protection plan i'd had enough.

They did innovate and take chances though. They made the price guarantee plus 10% thing a household item. Everyone knew that if they found an item for a lower price they'd not only give you the difference but an extra 10%. They started Carmax and always had new novel items that often failed in the marketplace but they'd put their neck out and invest in it anyway hoping they'd land the next big fish.

I felt that the fatal flaw in their approach was trying to assign you a commissioned salesperson for a big box item. This personal sales approach is better suited to a botique store but not for a tv or a video game IMO. At Best buy you knew the advice from salespeople was at least not based on commission as they are paid by the hour. I'm sorry to see so many out of work but i'm not sad the company has gone under..not suprised either.

Is carmax going down too or has it been sold off?

Is there a list anywhere of which Circuit City stores are closing when?
