So if HDR takes 3 photos, would it always require a tripod or still subjects?

Stupid question I know but I am new to photography.

Not always, you can take a RAW and take 3 exposures from that and save them as 3 different pictures. Many DSLRs have an option for bracketing so that if you have a high enough shutter speed then you can take 3 pictures as fast as your camera so you can do it handheld and the camera will automatically change the exposure for each.

I've not played with HDR too terribly much. I did a photoshoot of an car a while back which was parked on reflective travertine tile. It was cool because at the right angle you could see both the hood of the car and a reflection of the undercarriage. However, with a single exposure, the undercarriage was too shadowed unless the highlights were blown out. So I combined a few pictures with the CS3 merge to HDR function. The result didn't look fancy, but it did show the undercarriage as I wanted it to (though the picture wasn't particularly good). I didn't notice or play with any further functionality. I think there may be some tonemapping capability, but nothing like Photomatix. I haven't played with it at all in CS4.

The various programs will attempt to line up your images for you. You can get away without a tripod sometimes, but note that for the over-exposure, you'll be looking at a slower shutter speed, so blur may come into play. (Yes, you could stop up, but then you'd be merging two shots of the same scene with different depths of field... I'm not sure how that would turn out). It's probably best to use a tripod.

For those who aren't familiar with tone mapped images, I think that Pete Carr is one of the best. Quite often I don't like HDR images, but most of his are quite nice, probably because where HDR really shines is sky scapes, something he takes great advantage of.

Note that in that scene, it's highly unlikely that with a single exposure the details in the smaller buildings at the left would be visible without the large cloud above them completely blown out.

As a final note (since this is WAY off topic of the thread), this technique is hardly new. It's not even limited to the digital era. Some photographers were making prints from multiple negatives as far back as the early 1900s. The absolute master (IMO) of multiple negative printing is Jerry Uelsmann (who is still active today). He was more interested in surrealism, but some of his prints exhibit high dynamic range. (Film and photographic paper, in general, have more dynamic range than consumer digital sensors, but it's still highly limited when compared to the human eye). http://www.uelsmann.com/

Basically, yes. All other methods like taking 3 exposures from a RAW are not real HDR.

Haha yep. They're mountains actually - and yes, we do have them in LA! You just can't see them sometimes because of the smog. ;) Mt. Wilson is back there somewhere.

The wife and I went to a new restaurant in Orlando last week. Had a great time!

Here's the view from our table, looking back into the ice cave behind my wife's seat, and then looking over my shoulder into the volcano room. The restaurant is divided into 5 different themed rooms, and seats 1000 people. Located at Down Town Disney. T-rex is run by the people who own Rain Forest Cafe
