As some of you know I am getting my dash recovered. My shop ordered a skin that we thought was a real good match (grain and color), but I saw it today and the color is far too gray to match the very black leather in the car. A couple of questions:

    - are all of the solid black 400/400i's the same color black interior?
    - is there a US source for the identical color and grain?
    - has anyone made a very good match from a catalog of other car's make and year? If so, what was the code, car and year?

My shop is getting a patch or two of other choices before ordering another hide. If I give him a source he will buy it there.

You can also work with a regular leather supplier to the design trade to get a duplication from a supplied sample. For my aircraft I regularly work with Texstyle but Townsend and Edelman should all be able to do something.

Both Townsend and Edleman were quite prompt supplying samples. I am sure I could have found a match with them but worried if it would have the correct treatment for automotive use. However, before getting their samples I found a near perfect match from an automotive source. The BMW Black is a very good color and grain match to the original. Of course, one is matching new to 25 year old. The BMW black should be available through any good upholstery shop.

Spinneybeck do not appear to have a black and their hides seem to be much more grained than the original. Why do you recommend them?

I would contact Katzkin in S. California...........they are feeno......feekno.....feanom......really great. Seriously...I ordered some custom leather covers for a 1997 Dodge Avenger I restored last year( long story in itself ) I ordered the new covers on a Thursday night....I picked my colors, stiching, pattern, emblems, etc. They were delivered to the dealership the next Wednesday morning.....Great service, and a perfect fit. Just my .02

Yes they have black. If you PM me your address, I'll send you a sample.

Also, believe it or not the 400 leather had that much texture when new. If you paint some dye on the leather the grain will lessen.

This may sound very odd and like dumpster diving...but here goes.

Two years ago soon after I purchased a used 1987 TR it was in need of R & R of a section of the dash. I went from leather vendor to upholtery house trying to get a piece of leather that would match the grain, color and patina that the car had "acquired" over the last 20 years. No luck, and decided that I would just bite the bullet and redo the entire dash and more if need be. Then my wife came up with a suggestion..................

I went to a couple of Salvation Army and Goodwill Thrift stores with sample in hand and low and behold I found a near perfect match via a mens long "duster" type leather coat.................Cost.....$7 usd. I can tell which portion of the dash was recovered, but no one else seems to be able to point it out. Plus, I have an entire "stash" now of matching leather on hand if in the future I need to do another repair.
