when starting the car today in the cold (garage; listen to the "music":)) i had the impression, that condensed water smoke is delivered only by the outer pipes on both sides; could it be, that the inner pipes are blind? i noticed also, that only the outer pipes get dirty. Opinions/technical explanation very wellcome. reg. e

Inners have baffles, vac. operated. Open at ?3-4k IIRC. My inner pipes are the filthy ones. I think I spend too much time WFO.
They're why car starts and is loud, then in about 5-10 seconds quiets down. Baffles close.
Here's a pic of a clean gently driven 599, and mine. You can see how dirty the inners are on mine :)

Eli- There are valves in the two inner tailpipes which only open at higher throttle settings/rpm. This is done to give more back pressure and torque at lower throttle settings/rpm, as well as being quieter. This has the effect of the exhaust gasses exiting the outer pipes the majority of the time. They will tend to discolor quicker than the valved tailpipes because they are the only ones with flow in normal driving. My 575M exhaust showed the exact same thing.

If you look in Ricambi's parts catalog for the 599, you should be able to see those valved tailpipes in the rear exhaust section.

Lee- Thanks. Guess that shows how the original owner of my car drove it. He was nowhere near as aggressive as you are.

How do you avoid tickets? If I had driven my Z06s like that around here, I would have gotten one a week. The C6 Z06s had valves in the tailpipes, too.

Gary- It snows here 5-10 times a year since Albuquerque is at 5300'-7000', depending on where you live. Normally it is all gone by the next day and even if it is not, the roads are dry. It is so dry here, the snow tends to sublimate rather than melt, and except during exceptional snows, there is little wet run-off.

You can drive your Ferrari 12 months a year here.

When people ask me aboout Albuquerque, I usually say crime is too high, IQs are too low, but the weather is nice. That unfortunately covers a lot of places, except for the weather bit.

Gary- P Zero Sotto Zeros with studs. I got caught in April in NE with a 550bhp Twin Turbo Z in 14" snow. Balloon footed for 200 miles, only spun 5 times on ice, never in ditch. Won't try that again.
Taz- Valentine 1 hardwired, keyed hot. Years of habit. Lease a low mileage judge. :)

The inside pipes are the ones that should be dirtier when driven with urgency.
The description of the Euro(no side marker lights) car in Houston is a bit hyperbolic. All Ferraris are road tested 100kms/60mi. If fault found, shorter 25km/15mi loop, most I've seen is 2 extra loops. If car has 60 on it, it was clean check out. Roll bar and harnesses available on Euro cars. Euro cars have LC button, US cars have to make do with the paddle trick.

Yeah, but that is what the owner told me, which is why it is in quotations, and who better to give the description of the car than the owner himself. And i was thinking that too, i guess this car is just driven a lot at but not very hard at all??

Sfumato, what color is your car? It's beautiful.

It looks like a dark, non-metallic grey. Is it Grigio Scuro?

Or is it Silverstone and it's just the lighting playing tricks on my eyes?

I've wired my inner pipes open all the time, then you can hear the glorious V12 all the time, not just at start up! :D
It does mean the inner pipes are very dirty, very quickly though!

Is it an easy thing to undo if you need the car to "quiet down" for long journeys or...driving through Switzerland :p ?

Carlo- The color on Lee's car is a one off. Knowledge is on a need-to-know basis only. Requires a special clearance to find out.

    I see...:)

    I'll offer a deal.

    I'll reveal my 500's super-secret color in exchange for Sfumato's 599's super-secret color.

*spits on hand and offers it*

    Deal?

Mike- Not from me. Not only do I not know the exact color, but I like having the use of both my hands. Cauterization is such a pain.

Why, were those photos supposed to remain secret?

Wow...all this secrecy. Is it some sort of stealthy color out of area 51 that makes you invisible to speed cameras? If that's the case, cauterization might be worth it :D :D

    Oh well...

No secret photos, just color. I like one-offs.
Invisibility could be an issue, I won't say. There are electronics, and 117's were a dark grey.
I like Taz, so probably just one hand :)
Thanks for kind words. It took a bit to order it that way. Photos don't do it justice, but Mike came close. Thanks again Mike.
