200 Street examples were required before the EVO's could be raced in Group B. The street examples were never intended to be race cars.

My '89 328 has a space saver as well.
For racing I would imagine you could just take out the spare tyre and the tool-kit (including the light bulbs).
Although maybe it would mess up the weight distribution.

Can someone give me some info as to why the 288 is selling around 500k? I understand the F40/F50/Enzo are superior technologically but the 288 has that low volume, pure beauty and of course the performance to live up to the GTO tag. Is it because it's a new fcar? Does anyone think this car could compete with some of the other top dollar cars? If so, how long until it starts appreciating?

    I'm just biased

Keep in mind that today all 1985 288's are US EPA legal and in one year will be Fully US EPA/DOT legal so there will be a lot more that can be sold/brought into the US without having to be Federalised and that will effect price. In a year the same thing will begin happening with F 40's. The prices in Europe are lower than in the US and this will equilibrate/lower 288/F40 US prices.

    Jim:

There are just 272 or so GTOs to choose from. The car has worldwide appeal and essentially there is only one version.

The eligibility of the car for DOT approval in 2010 will have zero effect in decreasing values, and in fact as the economy improves GTO values will soar.

The reason there are only ever twenty-something GTOs in the USA, is that whilst there are cars that are coming into the USA very occasionally, there are cars that are leaving the USA (as was the case last month) to satisfy the aforementioned worldwide appeal. There are GTOs in the most remote locations imaginable (in some cases, unimaginable...)

The F40 is another story. Currently there are TEN TIMES as many F40s in the USA as there are GTOs...

Frankly, Im surprised they bring only as much as they do, but thats OK because some enthusiasts are buying them now.

The highest number I know for sure (documents in my possession) that a GTO has sold for was in December 1989 when a certain car sold for $1,900,000.

I should also add that the new DOT mandate in 2010 will have ZERO effect in the sudden availability of cars from the rest of the world.

Additionally, the lower prices of GTOs in Eu are because the cars on offer are seriously lower quality/higher miles etc. "Rode hard and put away wet" were the notes that accompanied one high-mileage car I had inspected recently. For example, the best car on the market abroad right now is the ex-Gary Shaevitz 57691 which has just 3,560 km on the clock. It is as perfect as I have seen a car, but SPS want $700,000 for it. You pay for quality. This car incidentally has no DOT or EPA issues as it can come back to the USA because it was already released on June the 12th 1986 when Alfredo Pedretti brought it in for Shaevitz. I have no affiliation with the seller.

wasnt gary the buyer on the gooding car? why would he have bot the gooding car for marginally less money than his ex-car with only 3560 kilometers on the clock?
i must be missing something there.

Gary was NOT the buyer of the Gooding car. His ex-car is far away in Hong Kong right now.

huh. i thought it was him. my bad. sounds like a great car nonetheless. can you expand a bit on why you feel that the elimination of the DOT issues would not cause more inventory to come into the US? i would have been more in support of the thought that eliminating import constraints would cause lower priced european cars to flow our way a bit more than they currently do.

    You have an e-mail.

Regarding the DOT mandate from 2010 on: maybe a lower priced Euro car (read: lower quality Euro car) might come this way a little more readily, but note that this DOT constraint hasn't stopped anyone I know from importing a car they want from abroad. Ergo there are 2O-something of them here right now! Plus, a guy in, say Germany, is not going to suddenly decide: "Time to put the GTO up for sale, I hear the Americans have now dropped the DOT requirement". I think the 2010 DOT mandate will nave no effect on values whatsoever because I don't think it will cause supply to increase. In my opinion. But, what do I know?

Forget about the DOT 2010 issue, these cars have always been liquid to both here and overseas...If you really want a euro car, you can make it happen. I've been buying and playing with ferrari cars since the 1970's...the bottom line is, it's all about supply and demand...and the US exchange rates at that time...In the early 80's. with a very favorable US dollar...the USA guys were buying up everything the overseas guys had and shipping here for good profits....the last few years have been the reverse...I sold a very important car to europe in '05.....because it made great sense to the buyer to buy based on the devalued dollar...The tides will change and we'll do it all over again.....these 288's are very liquid throughout the world because of what the are, not because of dot issues of 2010........In my humble opinion.. : )
