My painter is trying to remove the interior rearview mirror on 7580 and doesn't see how it comes off and neither do I. I suspect it twists off, but given the unforgiving nature of brittle 35 year old car parts, I would like to have advice rather than learn the hard way.

    How is the mirror removed?

Another question is regarding recovering the mousefur of the dash. How large a task is it to get the dash out? I bought mouse fur over 20 years ago and have been allowing it to age in a humidity controlled climate (my basement). Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Jim

I'm sure that both of these topics have been covered. The "search" function is your friend.

Jim - I just took a look at mine. I have had it off several times during the past years, but I'll be darned if I can figure it out now without actually pulling on it. I think that it is held by a ball "spring jaw" under the black rectangular base. My Boxer has a similar mechanism. I would give it a good tug and twist and it should come off. Then there will be several sheet metal screws that will remove the base. I believe that there is a ball and spring joint holding it together.

Here you go mate, the picture not very clear Im afraid is the back of the mirror showing the hole where the ball joint Jim referred to pushes into,if you have a GT then there are two holes either side for the sunvisors to sit in.Place a good size screw driver into one of the holes till it touches the centre and pull down firmly, tape or cushion the driver in case you chip the paint. With a GTS I suggest you take the mirror of the stem,a small nut then you can grab the stem and pull it firmly towards you should come out ok dont be afraid of putting plenty of pressure on it hope this helps.

    Damn, I did a pretty good job explaining that, didn't I? :D

no real trick, just gotta give it a good tug. Mirror is firmly attached to the base, it's not going anywhere.

    Cool Dave.

Now, how do I make it acually look out the back window and not at the engine cover?

I always figured the main function was to watch for engine fires...

Slouch down in the seat. You have to manually adjust your height to reflect that of an average Italian male in 1972. That's about 5'5" I think.

Actually, I wedged the mirror base at one point in order to facilitate some minor viewing out the back.

Otherwise, just use the equally useless side mirror on your driver's side door.

Thanks very much for the information. I thought I should have been able to find it with the search function, but I guess I didn't spell it out specifically enough to get it to come up.

    I appreciate all the advice.

The trick is to use the "Advanced Search" function. That allows you to narrow it down to a specific forum, i.e. 206/246. Then I just typed in "rear view mirror" and came up with the above thread.
