I am looking to replace the tires on my '64 series 1 330gt. My car currently has a set of Cinturato 215 VR 15's that are burnt with one pristine spare in the trunk.
I thought that this was the correct tire but apparently not.
It is alleged that the correct original tire for this model was a Pirelli 205/ 65/ VR 15 Cinturato HS tire.
Any thoughts on the BEST replacement for this model (original look)? The original tire does not have a profile size. Is the 65 profile correct?

    Correction:
My car has a set of Pirelli 205/ 65/ VR 15 Cinturato HS tires.
The original tires were supposedly the 205 VR 15's

You will have to do a bit of seaching, but there are threads on here and on www.tomyang.net discussing tire options.

Look into the Pirelli P4000 Super Touring (must be Super Touring). Not original of course like the Centurato, but keeps you in the Pirelli family and you should be able to get the correct ratio tire. Also, I find the handling to be excellent.

Check out the Vredestein Sprint Classic 205/70 VR 15. It's a high speed tire, a period 1960s design, and inexpensive. I'm told it's a really good tire as well, but have no direct experience.

I put Pirelli P4000E tires purchased from Tire Rack on my 365GT 2+2 and am very happy with them. They are modern High speed rated tires excellant in all conditions. BE Aware that the holes in your wheels are .625" = 5/8" and require larger then normal Valve stems that are somewhat hard to find. Normal valve stems will leak air presssure as they are 1/2" diam.

Try this place for inexpensive tire valves with grommets for 1/2 and 5/8 inch holes. They are schraeder-bridgeport valves identical to the original equipment valves, from all appearances. I used them on my 365 GT 2+2 restoration. They're beautiful. I used the original valve caps instead of the ones that came with the valves.

All really great tips. Thank you all for the solid replies!
The right valves are a huge plus to have also. Mine are a mis matched mess.

    mg,
Because the clamp-in tire valves are only for tubeless tires without tubes, if your wheels leak due to porosity or corrosion at the tire bead, you will need tubes, and that precludes using the clamp-in valves. That is, of course, unless you have Borroni wire wheels with good fitting rubber seal bands for the spokes. I may be wrong here. Maybe the Borronis always use tubes. I was lucky. Although one of my Campagnolo alloys leaked before the restoration and required an inner tube, it did not leak after I had them all stripped, reprimed with a Zinc Chromate primer , and repainted - inside and out. I was able to go without tubes and use the original style clamp-in stainless steel valve stems.
    Good luck.

Great points. I do not even know if I am running tubes or not. I have not examined the stems too closely. Am am hopeful of not. It will be a crap shoot on if I do or don't!
Thanks again for the solid points!

You are definitely running tubes on you Borranis. You'll need valve stem spacers to make up for the larger hole in the Borranis when you put in new tubes. Don't forget to use Talcum Powder on the tubes when you're mounting the tires and new rim tape. A supplier on my website has all these items.

I just got a chance to drive a GTE with a set of Vresdestein Sprint Classics, and found them to be very nice.

    All,
This is a great group of replies.
I decided to run with the Pirelli P4000 Super Touring tire in the 205/ 70-ZR 15 size. Although I have not had much of a chance to run, I'd say that with what little I have, I am very happy with the compliance and ride (compared to the original Cintuarto high speeds). The car points and grips just as an excellent set of radials should! The look is not too terribly retro, but is a good trade.
    Thanks,
    mg

One thing worth mentioning in this regard is, that independent of what type of rim you have, the choice between running with or without tubes is not just a matter of losing air or not.

Rims for tubeless use are constructed/formed differently, and have extra small 'humps' in the bed of the rim, preventing the tyre to slide inwards on the rimbed if the pressure becomes low or the sideways load excessive. IIRC the mark for tubelss rims to look for is 2H. If you compare rims side by side it becomes obvious.

Car looks fantastic, very, very nice color, one of my fav's. Hope you like the tires, it's what I have on my Miura and I think they are an excellent choice. I agree with your assessment, not terribly retro (and on the otherhand, not goofy modern looking) but a good trade, specially considering the alternatives.
