I have an '89 cab and the first owner had an '80's (large) cellphone installed in it. Complete with the mic wired up the driver side A-pillar, electronics mounted in the front where the spare goes, and worst of all, the windshield was drilled for an antenna. Removing the electronics won't be too bad, but the windshield...It didn't bother me when I bought it, but the car has low miles (15k), and is in excellent shape otherwise. I have been thinking about selling it to upgrade - maybe to a 575 - and was wondering if I should pay to replace the windshield before I did.

Unless you feel that spending $3-4k for windshield, mouldings and a perfect installation will either increase the value of the car,
or at least not detract from it, pull the trigger. IMO, if yer gonna upgrade cars, leave it alone.

I'd be willing to bet that a good windshield shop can fill/seal the hole. The resins available today work really well.

Thanks for the advice - I thought there might be resin patch that would work.

Really, they drilled the windshield for an antenna? I didn't think you could even do that! I've seen (and installed) a bunch of glass mount antennas, but they had a sticky bit on the inside and a sticky bit on the outside, but they didn't go through the glass (but the RF did). Seems like it would be cheaper and easier (and easier to fix) to drill a hole in the metal.

    Amen Brian.

Check that out sleeper, as I would guess that the antenna is just stuck on the glass inside, and out. I have NEVER seen a drilled one.

Thanks - I was kinda afraid to take it apart and not get it back together again if there was a hole there. I'll check it out!

Can you tell what brand of antenna it is? In the 15 years I've been sticking Larsen antennas on stuff I've never seen anything but stick-on glass mounts - no drilling required. But when cell phones were being installed in cars there were a million different glass antennas. Post a picture of it.

Slide a razor blade under those caps to break the silicone and twist those two off. Done.

Or take some dental floss and work it under & through the base like a saw blade. Done.

    Enjoy!

T windshields are really worth 3-4 grand, ouch. Are 3.0 and 3.2 windshields that much as well?

No, my windshields cost me 500 pounds sterling apiece in England.

Thanks for everyones help. Came right off. Got most of the wire out. If electronics continue to improve at this rate, we can't be that far from 2-way wrist TV's!
