    Ok guys, I'm a new guy here. I've been lurking for a while and have been reading posts. I don't own a Ferrari, I'll just get that out in the open. I am a Ferrari enthusiast and have been since birth. I'm also one of those annoying people who have to know how everything works. So I'll pose my question and see what kind of response I get.

    On the 400 series Colombo engines, I notice that the intake looks like it is run into the valve covers. Does it run directly into the cylinders between the camshafts? Is this a dumb question? Haha. Does anyone have a picture of a cylinder head disassembled or partial disassembled so I can take a look? I'm just a curious guy, and it's pretty cool and confusing to me at the same time.

    Thanks in advance for any clarification,

    Brian

    Brian,

    Yes, the intake runs between the cams but if I recall, there is a funky set-up inside one of the valve covers. I've seen a picture in the section but I'm not sure where at the moment. My car only has two cams so my own pictures won't work ;)

    By the way, welcome aboard!

    Art S.

    Thanks for the quick answer. My main reason for asking is, my experience has been in Fords mostly. I worked at a Ford performance shop in Austin Texas for a while (5+ yrs.) and that's really my knowledge base. Ford had a 255 cid. Indy engine that was built by Cosworth that was a DOHC setup and had the Webbers running between the cams like this. The main thing that set it apart was the fact that the headers ran in the V of the block to reduce the overall size of the engine. Has anyone thought about doing something crazy like that with one of these engines in something like a P4 or 512M/S replica? Is the bolt pattern symmetrical and could you swap heads over from side to side? I know on Ford's you can, but I know these aren't Ford's. Haha. Again, I'm just one of those crazy outside the box thinkers.

    Thanks for humoring me,

    Brian

    Yeah, I've been watching that V12 in a 308 post for a while. LOL I see the link you sent me to, that guy is using a 2v engine as well. Did they have 4v versions of this engine? I think the Testerrossa used a standard style intake manifold mounting setup. It's just cool to me that Ferrari used this sort of intake manifold style.

    Is it not stamped on the information plackard? The build date should be stamped on there, it is on just about every other car I know of.

    Wow, that's really cool. Thanks so much for going to the effort to help me understand it. Did they ever make a 4v version of these heads or were they all 2v?

    no, the 2V per cylinder 412 motor was the final evolution of the 60 degree Colombo V-12. it was an all new design for the 456.

    There are also some pretty entertaining pictures in this other thread (also from Brett);

    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=220701

    They show the plenums and air horns inside the intake. Pretty fantastic stuff!

    I find the engine architecture interesting. From what I can tell daytona heads were different, with 6 downdraft carbs in the "vee" of the engine. I suppose the DCOE's (and then the injection after that) allow for a lower hood line? Or perhaps a longer intake tract for better low end?

    I would like to see pics of a 365 GT4 intake arrangement for comparision.
