If you ever want to take more cars than you have drivers for, I'll volunteer!

Ordering my Rosetta Stone Italian language now...

Edit: at 5'7"/150# there's probably no cockpit I can't fit in.

Comments like this add nothing to what has been a very good thread.

Using the word replica and 0854 in the same sentence shows a reckless disregard for the truth. 0854 not only has her original chassis, engine, and gearbox she now has her original body as well. Anyone making a statement to the contrary will suffer immediate legal action period. Her entire history and providence is public record, has been since her inception, is continuous, without any gaps what so ever and is fully confirmed up to and including my ownership of her by the FIA.

    :)

Earlier in this thread you can see where the Le Mans # lights were removed from 0854 after Le Mans. On J6 which retained her Le Mans number lights, after many years of driving we found cracks in the paint that showed where another number light had been mounted.

It was likely removed when H&M painted J6 as J5 for Auto Shows after Le Mans. When we returned J6 to her proper colors we missed one # light. Years later we saw the outline of where the missing light was as the paint shrunk and left a ghost outline.

We then rectified that oversight and mounted the missing (Top) number light.

Here's a couple of photos of a rather nice (IMHO) replica of 0854 (in it's Piper '67 Kyalami guise):

Trust me on this, Jim. ;)

Piper's 0854 at Kyalami in '68 carried race #3 and had the big rear wheelarch extensions (and was also co-driven by Attwood).
The '67 #7 Kyalami car is often remembered for Dickie's pitlane accident, and subsequent 'scaffolding pole and duct tape' repairs.

As you've noted before Barchetta has a lot of stuff wrong. Did Jo Siffert ever drive her?

Photographic evidence in your email inbox, Jim. ;)
According to my records (which may be wrong), he did - at the '68 1000Kms de Paris, Monthléry.
But Dickie Attwood was Pipe's more usual choice of co-driver in #0854 (particularly in South Africa).

    Thanks for that, Boudewijn. ;)

    That's why I'd written:

Agreed, have been doing some research into 0854, interesting experience putting or trying to put all the history together.

What about if someone says its a replica or a fake "in my opinion"?

I mean, it says a lot if legal action must be used to enforce a car's provenance, and even then, if many people doubt a car's history, what does one do? Sue them all?

Anyone that claims that 0854 is in anyway a replica is showing a reckless disregard for the truth. There is no evidence what so ever that would allow someone to hide behind "opinion" in making such a statement. None. It's continous history, providence and originality of it's chassis, gearbox and body is absolute and completely accepted worldwide. It's accident history where it's non original fiberglass body burned up, it's repair thereof, and it's restauration history including the refitting of it's original body has been public knowledge for many, many years. For some bizarre reason someone in this tread recently implied that 0854 is a replica. I responded to their reckless disregard of the truth. They disregard my warning at their peril.

Have to say, I agree with Jim here. It's important to understand that those questioning provenance create a financial consequence for the owners of the vehicles (especially in a forum of this stature). Given the documentation and value of this car, it IS a bit reckless to go raising red flags where none exist. Free speech should be honored of course, but it does have its limits after all -- You can't yell fire in a crowded theatre or claim someone is a fraud when they are not. If damages can be proven (such as in the latter example) words can cost you.

Personally, if I had questions about its originality, I'd ask the questions. To suggest it's a fake without representation isn't fair to anyone.

Regardless, this is a beautiful car and I appreciate how meticulously his vehicles have been restored and maintained in their intended state.
