Anything really, instead of going through American Idol, and what not to get signed, what ways are there to get someone signed. This isn't me that wants to get signed, this is just another unsigned music, I would like to help out in Austin, "Music Capitol of the World".

If your friend is an attractive female, she can sleep her way to the top.

That is a tough question, there are many artists out there signed to deals that get nowhere. What type of genre? Band or solo artist? How commercial is it? There are so many talented people out there that it has little to do with it. The vast majority of American Idol contestants are not musicians and never will be. The ones who make are mostly super driven or well connected. You need to get out there and play and promote full time if you want to go far. Exposure is everything. It's an expensive field to survive in and touring is expensive. You can open for a band in an arena tour and make $200 a night since you are gaining exposure, but you will be spending about $1000 a day on you bus and then paying the crew will double that. Add in per diems and hotels and it adds up real fast. All this goes into the label's you owe us tab. You can do so much without a label. Ingrid Michaelson has proven that. I've gone on the road in vans and survived fine. You can do it on a budget. If you build up enough following they will come to you. Itunes and many other sources have opened up a whole new world for artists and those who are truly good or entertaining enough can make a good living without a label. If you only draw 45 people to a show in your hometown then it's going to be hard to get interest. If 2000 people are coming they will probably already be aware of you. Right now ticket sales are tough so hit the internet and promote. You have South by Southwest coming up!!! Are they booked to perform? Build your own following and let them come to you and then decide if you really need them for anything other than airplay.

We've all heard this before but it's so true. Record labels need tax write-offs too.

I know a band, Nelo, that had a large following in Austin ( former UT and UNT lab band members) and Dallas, where most of them were from. They were advised by some Nashville agents to go build a following. They headed to Athens Ga and did just that for 2 + years. They signed recently with a Willie Nelson Label, and are now touring larger venues, and fronting for some bigger acts. Looks like they are headed in the right direction. Google them for their website and give a listen.

    Best of luck !

My bad I should've explained more, I was talking to this guy, a singer on YouTube actually, probably the best place to find unsigned singers, and started talking with him, and asked him where he wants to go. So, I asked him some questions on if he wants to get signed. He said yes and some other things, I told him, if he would like I could try helping him out, since I know some people that play instruments and all that.

Again, it is not me, or anyone I know. We needed a performer but that week that we have our event, he won't be able to come since he is actually trying to form a bank and play at SXSW. He sent me a reply to my email and said, he may have a producer willing to sign. Thanks again for all your help. I think you can close this thread now.

He can always meet a startup label owner online, go to Manhattan and meet with them, stand in the booth all night droppin' sick rhymes and then be told that they want him to write something commercial that will be popular so that the label can get off of the ground. Then again, if he's not a stubborn ass and does it, it might actually get him somewhere.
