If the factory would agree to sell you a 1985 288 GTO then the first step was a deposit of 14 million lira ( about $7,000). With optional air conditioining and power windows the price was $125,000. Payment was expected two weeks before you picked up your car at the factory. In the resale market prices escalated quickly from there.

Correct. In fact depending on the exchange rate of the country you were in at the time, it was equal to between $78,000 and $90,000 US. I say this because USA customers purchased cars from dealers based in different European countries...

Of2worlds, I think you are speaking of Canadian $?

It looks like there might be some interest in this after all.

Good to hear from the GTO owner from Mexico City (57699).

So far there has already been interest from the owners of cars 57697, 52739, 57493, 56343, 55669, 58137, 54225 and of course, 56331.The owner of 56783 needs encouragement :)

I would love to be there with 55721!

Would you object if I tried to organise a UK/Europe equivalent?

Not at all! The more the merrier...

A little bird tells me Italy is considering one??

There is almost a 100% interest from GTO owners contacted in the USA. Trouble is most of the owners are hard to contact...

Oh, and I almost edited your post to read: "I WILL be there with 55721!". No excuses RTB, at this point you'd win "Furthest Travelled..."

I believe this car was supplied new to Jean Blaton, the former GT driver who raced under the psuedonym 'Beurlys'. By the mid 1990s this car was in Switzerland.

    This is 56207.

No Joe, good old Yankee Bucks... the figure of $125,000 (less the deposit I mentioned) was the price quoted by an American buyer Jere Clark when he picked up his GTO at the factory in 1985. Air conditioning and power windows were included on the GTO for that price.
The 1984 base price FOB Maranello was $83,400USD. From another source the base price in 1984 was quoted as 121,600USD in Italy including 38% tax. Expressed another way the 1984 introduction price was set at 140 million lire which was said to convert to $90,000USD at that time. One option originally quoted was a roll bar as well as the A/C and power windows. The GTO would go 70 MPH in first gear. Ferrari thought they might have trouble moving the required build of 200 cars at the price. However all 200 were spoken for six months before the Geneva introduction. This was also before a firm price had been officially announced.
