308 Assembly Sequence Numbers

Scott... Do you mean to say that 31309 was the first GTSi of 1980...? Because I have serial numbers much earlier than that from 1980. Also, 30735 is identified as an injected GTS. Your car, 31311, is the third GTS as far as I know. Lastly, I have 31327 as last being for sale on eBay in March of 2008 - has it been for sale since then...?

Not to my knowledge, but I recently saw a post where someone asked for some information and only received half of an answer. I can't see Ferrari allocating time to any of its employees to fill in the gaps for a register.

#22641 is abandoned in a South Austin alley off Congress Avenue....
#22127 is dismantled at Vintage Motorcars and they don't seem inclined to reassemble it...
#20405 appears periodically at the Saint Arnold's brewery tours, and is awaiting repairs from my neighbor smashing into it.

 

It wouldn't answer the question of how many remain, anyway....I'm sure thousands have been lost, at this point

OK, let me know the two questions on production you want to know.I'll write the letter and have it translated and courier it to them. Also, I will need a place to print out the most current set of information to provide them in regards to year, vin, manufacture date and such. I am not saying they will provide every detail of their manufacturing logs, but I do think that cultivating a relationship with them will provide more answers than pinging each other and guessing. You can also PM me if you want to pass along any tips you have had working with them on certificates, history and such. Thanks, let me know.

Robbie, are you saying that none of the carbed 308s have VINs, but only serial numbers...? I ask this because 34379 is well into 1980 with many other models before it wielding VINs. Also, Edvar van Daalen's 'Decoding the VIN' section of his Website, Red-Headed.com, shows a letter for the fourth position of both Euro wet and Euro dry sump 308s (B and C, respectively).

 

Yep, that's what I say. I never saw a carb'd 308 GTB with a full 17 digit VIN, nor has it been reported to me from our chassis number researching friends.

I know, but has anybody ever seen or photographed one such 17-digit-VIN on a carb'd GTB? I am spotting these cars for 11 years now, but have never ever seen one. If it is not on the fifth-to-last car (34379), where else should it be?

 

I have seen and photographed a 17-digit VIN on a 308 GTS. I'll PM you and Carbon the link to the thread when I have found it.

BTW, the last 308 GTB for the UK (s/n 34347) is said to wear a full VIN: ZFFCA03C000034347. It s now located in New Zealand.

Another RHD 308 GTB believed to have a 17-digit VIN is s/n 30183: VIN is ZFFCA03C000030183

Also there is S/N30039, a yellow 308 GTB RHD, wearing an incorrect 14-digit VIN: ZFFH0000030039.

But as I said, until now I never saw one of those VIN-plates it in the flesh or a on photo.

I assume it might be possible that - towards the end of production - one or another car has received a 17-digit VIN plate, simply because they were in reach of the mechanic on the assembly line, or they ran out of the old ones, or the engraver made them mistakenly while working on a batch of 17-digit 308 GTBi badges... who knows.

I would suggest that you/someone come up with a real good connection to the factory when you try for this. There must certainly be some people on F-chat that have personal connections at the factory. Certainly some of the Classiche consultants would have the access but would they have the inclination? Since you went through the Classiche process did this give you any special insight in how to find the right people?

Here’s the info on my car if you need it. 1978 308 GTS #24903, build date June 1978, Engine # 00399, Trans # 3043/F106AL. Black/Black, 19,000 Miles, Borrani wire wheels. I believe it was purchased new in Chicago and is currently in Lubbock, TX.

Let me take a look next weekend; won't have time before then. It has been converted to electronic ignition so I may not have a coil bracket any more. I'll let you know what I find out.

Yes RHD and first registered in UK in January 1981....I'll be picking her up from specialist today so will check assy numbers if I can find them!
