Just been making some observations. As the Ferrari prices have been dropping, I've noticed that Lotus Esprit prices are pretty much holding steady. I wonder if it's because of fewer examples being made or what?
I bet Jetfixr is wishing he had his back...that was an awesome car. Not the same pedigree as a ferrari, but unique in it's own way. And like a street legal race car to boot.
Has anybody noticed other car prices holding steady, Porsche or Lamborghini? Or are those dropping too?

Modern Porsche's ie 1999 and newer have been dropping big time, the only Lambo's I pay attention to is the Galardo and it has also dropped a lot over the last year. I think (yes I am biased) the 355 will come out of this depression much stronger then the modern Porsche's or the Galardo. The newer Lotus models like the Exige are falling too.

Bentley gt's are dropping also and flying spurs, glidding downwards as well.
A car that has definitely held its value is the 328. An uncle of mine sold his no more than a year ago for what he got it for new in 86. He sold it for about what i lost so far in the 355.

When the 355 becomes 30 yrs. old we'll all be saying something similar.

I have been watching prices for the Porsche 996TT and the Gallardos for the last year and it seems they dropped about $10K (Porsche) and about $15K (Gallardo).

Lotus Esprit prices have may be steady, but few cars have fallen like the Exige S.

As posted, watercooled Porsche prices have collapsed. The 993s seem stable.

I think Esprits held value so poorly even before the current downturn that they didn't have much room to fall. They've always been a great car to buy a few years from new.

With regard to 355s, I suspect the economy has just shoved them down the depreciation curve before their time.

Me too. I traded my Exige S for my 355 (plus cash). It was a good trade for both of us, but even better for him now, as the Exige S just seems to be almost unsellable. I think there are still new 2007s out there.

Funny thing is, it is a fantastic car, absolutely awesome to drive, possibly the best sports car I have ever owned. But it is just too hard core for most people. My only complaint was the sound. That is the one area where the 355 has no equal.

I think the 355's also fall victim to the higher production numbers... it gives the appearance that they area dime a dozen.. On the up side when things start to recover the "good" cars will come flying back and the junk... well it will still be junk... I'm seeing the same thing with 348's people assume that since the junk cars are selling for peanuts that they all are that cheap.. those of us who know better, know that cheap Ferrari is not cheap :') The less you spend on one the more it will cost

The 355 has been dropping like a rock and will continue to go down. The belt maintanence is what is killing it along with the 360 and 430 dropping. I am seeing nice 360s go for BELOW what nice 355s were 2-3 years ago. That is crazy to me. Sad, too because nothing else sounds like a 355.

The Esprits were at such a great price point already that they haven't dropped a bit. There just aren't many of them. There were only a few hundred made each year and many have burned, crashed, etc.. At any given time, when you go to Ebay, there are usually around 20 or less TOTAL Esprits for sale and that includes 1970's all the way up 2004s. Makes for a nice, level price. I love my car and am enjoying it every bit as much or more as the Porsches or Ferraris I have owned.

I don't think the Esprit will go up much in price. Is it a collectable?? Maybe, as more crash, burn, etc.. But, to me, it is just an exotic car that is light, fun, timeless, and ALWAYS talked about at events (since you hardly ever see them).

I would say awesome to the left, and awesome to the right.

I am looking for another car and these 2 happen to be on my "list". On anything, but a boring oval, I would guess that the "yawner" on the left, might leave the 355 in the dust. Still, both beautiful cars in my estimation...

The Esprit may not be the pedigree of a Ferrari, but to me it is the best bang for your buck, that gets you into the exotic car world. Not to mention it is a riot to drive. I've had my '99 for about 2 years now and looking at what they are going for on e-bay, I don't think my car has depreciated at all. I also like the exclusivity of the car and the fact that most people don't know what it is. It makes the car stand out more to me.

That being said, I still do want to move into a 355 at some point, but selling the Esprit will be a sad day for me :(

I recognize that car... you were at Classics on the James last year. I had just traded Lotus for 355 a few months before. Good luck with the Giallo!

I REALLY miss my Esprit. In fact, I'd like to trade one of my 355's for one.....

    Awesome car!
