OBDII Connection for Euro F-355

US cars have the famous OBD connector somewhere in the dash. On euro cars, there is NO such a centralized OBD connector but you will have to connect to the one which is close to the Motronic behind the right seat. You can use it without any problem with any reader. You just need to connect 3 wires from your I/F to the 3 pins AMP connector. The pin function of this connector (K, L and ground) can be seen on the pictucture. The pin correspondence between a generic OBD connector and the 3 pins AMP connector is the following:

Left pin to OBD plug pin number 15 (L line)
Middle pin to OBD plug pin number 5 (signal ground)
Right pin to OBD plug pin number 7 (K line)

You can either build a small piece of cable to do this connector adaptation, or cut the cable of the reader and install a male 3 pins AMP connector (available in car stores). You will also need a power supply (+12V) which can be taken from the cigaret lighter.

Once you are connected it should work with only ignition on ... but with alarm de-activated (LED not blinking!). No need to start the engine for DTC reading but of course yes for live data monitoring.

Is that connector behind the seat the same on US cars? I understand the US cars have the "standard" plug under the dash, just curious if the ROW connector behind the seat is the same for US cars.

 

Some euro cars do not give the data output the usa cars do either. OBD2 is usa IIRC not rest of the world. So then you got to have the SD2/3 to see what is happening. The negative is you don't get some data. The positive is that the mil light does not come on as often for little stuff that would make you fail smog in places like the people's republic of california

 

Where is the connector under the dash for US cars, maybe I'm retarded but I can never find it.

 

Bumping an old thread, does anyone know a source where I can buy the pictured AMP connectors? I found similar ones online, superseal but they have a yellow coloured seal and totally different pins. Not your typical round pins. Seem to have been on every electronic website in the world and still no luck.. Help?!

Sent you a PM some days ago with the same address for that connector. The pins are not round but flat and about 1mm large.

 

Eric, thanks, I did get the PM and bought these connectors. I must be going senile as I could swear the connector in my car has round pins. Will have to double check or maybe I'm looking at the wrong connector. It's the free cable under the RHS panel when sitting in the car yes?

 

Yes, it is the free connector close to the Motronic, under the cover behind the right seat
