That progression is a FAR CRY from the original statement. If we go back far enough we can trace all cars to the horse and buggy (why do we still rate engines with "horse"power).

Actually "horsepower" was a measurement of power introduced by the Scottish Engineer and inventor, James Watt (1736-1819) to rate steam engines. The unit is actually quite low compared to what a horse is capable of...

It is the average power a horse produces while working over a full day - not the peak power one can produce - which is why it seems low. In my fit youth I could generate 1hp for maybe a minute (okay - probably more like 15 seconds ) - when viewed from that perspective it is a LOT of power!

 

Better to have and lost than to never had one to begin with.
