Hey Cameron...you know from my other posts that i am a straight shooter and I am going to be direct in responses to you.

I have been following your journey on the threads throughout the forums here, and a recurring theme keeps coming through... that you are struggling to find yourself now that the silver spoon is no longer working for you... your parents did you no favours...you want instant success and financial stability with the least possible risk and minimal effort in getting there...you feel entitled because of the myths that family, friends, post secondary educators, and society have told you... FINANCIAL SUCCESS DOESN"T HAPPEN THAT WAY.

Yes you would be taking advantage of the system by taking EI when you are fully capable of working... even if at Tim Hortons, McDonalds, or cutting grass and shovelling snow for a cemetery!

"I'm a complete mess when it comes to what I want to do with my life. Literally, a mess." - part of maturing and growing up, is taking responsibility, working dilegently towards a goal, and dealing with your position in the world... only you can plan to change where you are in life.

The best thing to do to sort it out, is to continue to contribute to society by working...any job at all... not sucking the tit of EI...that is just another replacement for mom and dad's past financial support.

You are 23 for Pete's sake...I was married and starting a family, venturing into home ownership, working my ass off for little money and continually chasing my goals... note...long term goals (by continuing education, night courses, correspondence programs, attending business entrepreneurial motivational meetings and reading everything available that related to my field of endeavor)... because rarely does success fall into your lap quickly or easily.

There is a difference between us Cameron... I always paid my own way for food, post secondary education...everything...I was born of a blue collar family, that valued family relationships and hard work..no hand outs... not a dime of financial assistance from family because there were no dimes to have... but was taught that anything was possible as long as you valued family and self first and work second.

So...get a job... evaluate yourself... get professional help and guidance if neccessary... pay your own way and take a second or third job if neccessary to achieve the financial ability to pay for additional schooling ... best advice that has been given over and over in your threads is to find out what you are really interested in and passionate about... go after it and be the best in your field ...and the financial stuff will work out later.

My son (age 22) remembers our family when we were struggling financialy... witnessed the transformation of a my business from a mess of a shoestring startup to the extremely successful entity that it is today. My son paid every cent of his education...he worked multiple jobs...Dad hung tough and did not hire him even as a summer student (it was hard to say no to my son)... Dad did not hire him into the business after he completed his education (again tough on Dads conscience).

My son has found his own way, and is embarking on a successful life in his chosen area of interest... and still works a second job (Canadian Tire shop now for 7 years)... to enjoy the extras such as an acreage up north with a trout stream that he purchased and built a cabin on... ... he is all that a proud parent would ever want to see in a son... and he has much to be proud of himself for his efforts.

    Food for serious thought.

Guys, I really did not want to derail this thread. I simply asked if I was taking advantage of the system by going on unemployment, and explained my reasoning behind considering doing so. I appreciate everyone’s input and advice, I really do. Like I said, the advice I get on this website is second to none. I don’t want to be a **** disturber and hopefully this thread will continue down its intended path.

Beev, I will address your post privately.

    Beev,
Right on. People need to take responsibility for their own lives and futures. I heard so often from people at a major telephone company that they would only learn things if the company paid for the training. Including needing a formal training course on using winzip. How pathetic.

I worked for 41 years, unemployed for a total of 2 weeks in all that time. Took a pay cut once, made career changes, whatever but never out of work. Yes, I paid into UI for many of those years (all but the last 7) and sometimes wished I could 'use up my contributions) but am proud of my accomplishments without needing to use UI. Always retrained myself, great if the company paid for the course but if not, I took the training anyway. _I_ am responsible for my life, no one else is.

So Cameron, suck it up and take a job, anywhere but don't wait for handouts. Those 8 or 12 weeks of UI will fritter away quicker than you think. Nothing good happens without some effort and often not without some sacrifice. And if you can't figure out what you want to do, then why would anyone hire you? This is the worst thing you can bring to an interview. One question I used to ask 'what do you like doing' or 'why are you applying here'. Fascinating answers, but the vague ones got no job from me. What have you accomplished or what can you accomplish for me are key to getting hired. Your degrees to me would be interesting but not key, it is about attitude. Those degrees will be relatively meaningless in 10 years anyway unless you keep current. Get some passion for what you do or you will be in this position frequently.

    Gerrit

From posts 126 and 129 we can (once again) conclude that the best school is still the "school of hard knocks".

I know...I've also graduated from it. Plus I took my last course (Project Management) when I was in my mid-forties. One of my friends then told me "Some of us go to school at the beginning of their lives (he), others (me) at the end". I told him he was wrong - I've been taking courses in almost any field (technical and commercial) throughout my entire life, and I don't intend to stop anytime soon.

There are few things as valuable as a wide horizon...not even a lot of cash...because true wealth is within and in what you know/are, not in what you "wear".

The best advice for success: If you really like what you are doing and are enthusiastic (sp?) about it and committed to it, success will come automatically...

Gerrit. Great seeing you the other day. Always a pleasure Sir!

I totaly agree with your post. And Cameron appears to be inteligent and just needs some guidance and there is very good info right here. Cameron, no one said it would be easy. There is always a way if you work hard and sacrifice. I graduated in Business Marketing at Humber College school of business (I know it's not University but it's the best biz course at the College level). I did this all at nite 3-4 nites a week! and a couple of classes during the day. While doing this "3 year" course that took me 4 years due to the sceduling...I worked. I worked hard doing everything from selling mens clothes at Eatons (RIP), as a bank teller then off to the car business. Then on my own. No where at a serious level yet but one day I will.

But I can say I did never went on UI. I worked, partied and went to school. :D

I do not like to say much about matters like this on a public forum.,. BUt what the hell!!! I went to university mostly a second rate school where after second year at the age of 20 I managed to get myself in to medical school in the US. After finishing my residency I came to the conclusion I hated medicine with a passion. I needed a change and went into law school and moonlighted in US clinics well I was at law school. I found I liked those clinics and bought some sold some and made myself a business. I liked law too started a firm when I was able!! I find myself at forty a shareholder in my medical company and on the sidelines now!!!

When I look at it all over again I say have fun when you are young and work until you are dead!!!!

    Nothing makes up for youth!!!!

Helsinki is the hottest...year round! - Lots of dissatisfied young Milfs there. Why? Just read up on Finland and you find that booze is the culprit...most men there drink so much that they don't have the energy/wits to think about sex....

And nordic women have quite a bit of fire in them, despite the frigid climate! How do I know? - Well, that's another story.... All I can say is that I spent 7 months on assignment there in 2002/2003 and didn't always stay home in the evenings...;)

Well time to bump this thread.

With all this negativity recently I actually heard real positive news today right from the selling floor. Apparently Benz stores in the GTA have just completed a record month of March and so have some other stores such as BMW. Now I am not sure how long it will last but any good news is great. My colleague who owns a large hi-end dealer (which is where I am situated) also had a very, very strong March!

I was out and about today visiting a couple of big stores and heard from very solid sources directly. Good for them!

    A few questions:

Are all the Bay Street, Big 5 banks all still rather healthy? How many jobs have the slashed? When do they post first quarter results?

What are the views on Ontario's lastest budgets? What does Ontario need to do to become competitive? Is the province starting to develop/grow other industries to shift from manufacturing (any place to find how many people are employed in this sector)?

Hopefully I can make it up to Toronto for a few days this summer.

Question: What's the difference between a banker and a pigeon?

Answer: A pigeon can still put a deposit on a BMW.

Now, what's the difference between a family sized pizza and an Investment Banker?

A family sized pizza can still feed a family of four.
