995 in N.Y.

Hey guys. I'm not really involved or educated with Porsches that much, but there's a dealer in N. White Plains, N.Y. that has one in their showroom. Don't have any pics, but I was told that there is a highly limited number of them produced, and even more so in the U.S. Any stats on the car (value, # made/ in the U.S.)? Also, does anyone know of the history of this car?

 

A 995 is a Cayenne in Porsche numerology. They are a volume unit and account for about 1/2 of PAG's worldwide sales.....

CRAP! I did say 995 didn't I. But really, Cayennes? Interesting... Anyways yes, that is the EXACT one I'm talking about. That place is awesome! I went in to check it out one day and ended up having a pretty lengthy conversation with the guy about life haha. But yes very cool place and thank you.

That is the stock interior.......odd combo though.

 

F40 any day if it is the 959. I was in University when the 2 came out and to this day I have a soft spot for the F40. I don't think much of the 959. Would prefer the 993GT2 over it. Sorry it is just my opinion.

959 came out about the same time as the 288GTO (1984), not the F40. So I guess you didn't do too well at University. But, I'd rather have a 288 over any car.

The 959 didn't actually hit production until '87.

 

If I remember correctly 1985 was when the 959 was released for rallying and 1987 was when they were released as road cars to directly compete with the F40. I was too young to drive back then but I remember every car magazine out there had the 959 and the F40 on it's cover. It looks better in person than it does on pictures. The performance, handling, comfort was in a league of it's own and even today about 25 years later it will embarass almost all the supercars on the road with it's acceleration, performance and handling. The vehicle was easy enough to drive on the daily commute to work, kids to school, even shopping but if you wanted to be wild and let those turbos spin all hell would break loose. I had the priviledge to drive my friends 959 about 12 years ago and until today it ranks as one of the fastest cars that I have ever driven and the collection of cars that I have had the chance of driving over the years has been impressive from highly tuned jap cars (skylines and the like), high performance mercedes and BMWs to lambos and ferraris.

I am not a porsche fan (eventhough I have owned porsches in the past) but the 959 deserves the credit it is due, it is a part of history and was one hell of a car back then and still is today.

 

I have always liked the 959. I still remember the poster I had on my wall as a kid, it a 288 GTO, 959, and Countach, and it said "decisions...decisions....decisoins"
If I actually had money to be shopping for this type of car, the 959 certainly would not be at the top of my list, but I always look at it fondly.

 

Local porsche dealer has a 959 on the floor. Cool car. I've not seen one for a while and haven't really had a chance to take a look around one close. I've always been a ferrari guy but its a cool car. Not as awkward looking in person as it is in pictures. Lots of curves and smaller than i remember it to be. All things equal i'd still take a GTO

 

My sentiments exactly. I have never been a huge Porsche fan, but the 959 is, to me, something very special and iconic. The 959 and F40 were direct competitors and subjects of many magazine comparisons. A very good one can be found in January 2008 "Octane" magazine. They are very different cars. The 959 was Porsche's very complex technological masterpiece incorporating virtually everything the company could come up with for what was intended to be an everyday road car. The F40 is a racer semi-civilized for the street with much less emphasis on accoutrements and comfort. Both are terrific machines in their own right. The F40 will always be faster than the 959 "Komfort" model on a closed track in the hands of a skilled driver with its significant weight advantage and similar power. The delta would be smaller against the 959 "Sport" (less weight, more power than the "Komfort"). For a multi-day 1000 mile tour over varying roads and weather conditions by someone with average driving skills, the 959 would be my choice.

I recently acquired the 959 that was the subject of the January 2008 "Octane" article.

Thank you, Michael. Having bought my first sports car (427 street Cobra) in 1971, I've been into cars a bit longer than many on this forum. I've had the pleasure to own a number of special cars over all these years and have always been a holder rather than buy/sell buy/sell, but after selling last year an original Ford GT40 that I had for almost 30 years, I decided to have some fun "playing with cars" and scratch some itches that I had for some time, such as the Porsche 959. I miss the Dino Spyder (06422) I had in the 1970s and keep thinking about getting back into one, but also want more seat time in the Daytona and 365 GTC before making that decision, as at least one of the V12s would have to go before a Dino came back to my garage. I'm also mulling over what to do with the old monster 427 SC Cobra. Its charms aren't quite what they used to be for me. A Weber-ized 289 Cobra may be a good replacement. We'll see.

 

Beautiful 959.

The 959Sport is faster to 60 than the F40 but after 100 the F40 pulls away. In dry I believe the F40 has the advantage but in wet the Porsche.

off topic, but I was looking on herb chamers Porsche dealership's website (Boston). When looking through his inventory I noticed a 959 lurking in the background. I believe it is herbs personal car.
