Can't remember which driver said they often never know who's going to win ( in the PACK !) going into the last corner before the last straight. Whens the last time that happened in F1 ? As far as all out competition in pro car racing nothing trumps Nascar. Thats the way it is good or bad.
F1 is primarily an exercise in engineering and secondarily a drivers' contest. NASCAR, like any spec series is mostly a drivers' contest. Different strokes for different blokes.
That wasn't for the win, it was for 5th, it wasn't a pack and it was foreseen, with the lap differences of like 14 seconds. Not comparable.
With all the rules governing the engine freeze, the cost cutting, the bodywork limitations, the limited wind tunnel time, the limited testing etc. it's no longer on the cutting edge of technology. While in F1 there are 4 drivers with a chance to won, sometimes 5 a year.
I'm so glad KERS came to F1. I hope it does well and reestablishes F1 technical credibility. The Bernie Max shows one redeeming quality.
It's definitely been dumbed down a bit with all of the new regulations but it still seems to be the tech leader in motorsports (more advanced aero, higer reving engines, KERS, etc). Are there other series you see to have surpassed F1?
Not quite the same. To quote from that article: "Unlike most racing series, the goal of the Prius Cup isn't to turn in fast lap times. Instead, the cars circle the track in agonizing fashion as they try and use as little fuel as possible." F1 uses KERS in combination with Push to pass. So it is not a lame fuel conserving race (24 hours of Le Mans anyone?) but to get a temporary power boost, no unlike the turbo era. Aside from being a lot more exciting than some hybrid crap, this is also how KERS will trickle down into the next generation of street Ferraris.
Didn't think I needed the smileys, but here they are Personally, I think the KERS thing is a gimmick. Trying to make racing "environmentally friendly" is a waste of time. My views are clear: Formula Libre. Give them a box in which the car must fit, a fixed amount of fuel, and a clutch pedal/stick shift, and let them go at it.
The pass was for 5th and then the math was done and Lewis Hamilton won. How exciting. Nothing like passing a guy that's lapping a dozen seconds slower.
I think it will make racing a lot more entertaining with a bunch of passes. And I also think it will come to a street Ferrari and make that more fun. Gimmick? Yes, but so are peddle shifting and manettinos and they sell like hot cakes.
did you watch the race? did you watch the season? Better yet, do you know what that particular 5th place was about? The pass itself wasn't anything amazing in particular, but the fact that the championship was won in the last corner is something else. It was the most exciting moment in formula one in years.
I know, a 5th place pass to decide the championship between a guy slipping and sliding in the rain and LH. That was the most exciting thing to happen in F1 in years........ isn't that a problem? I watched the race, the season and know what the pass meant and watched the Ferrari garage as their mood changed quickly. Name the dates of the last 5 dog fights for the lead that lasted more than a lap and had more than 1 pass. < That's my number one issue with F1, we have to go back years to find bits and pieces of passes, very fast laps under pressure and passes for the lead.
Classic! You're posts keep getting better and better! Btw, that "boring F1 race" and that "boring pass for 5th" was in the rain...... what happens in NASCAR when it rains???
You chuck them out there with 2CV wiper motors, the latest in squeegee mops and nine year old wets. Nationwide at Villeneuve circa 2008, Clint. A classic, until NASCAR did the prudent and yanked them off. Wimps. Fwiw, one of the competitors was Jacques V. who wanted the race to continue. Chip off the block. His old man finished third in the '81 Canadian GP during a heavy rainstorm with a car that had a hood ornament off a DeSoto.
If you watched last season as you said you did, what happened at Spa? That was exciting and had me on the edge of my seat. Kimi and Lewis passing each other and sliding all over the place. Even though the race wasn't over until the penalties were handed out the race was still exciting. If not that one how about the German Grand Prix? (I think) Where Lewis missed going to the pits in the closing laps while under yellow? He tried to put a 25 second lead on massa, couldn't, came in, put some new tires on, added some fuel, and came out in 5th (i think). Then charged back up the field to pass Piquet for the win. Hell, if you think about it we've had a pretty good season. Who would've thought a toro rosso could win a race? How about BMW? (ok, Hamilton hit Kimi in the rear on that race) Monaco in the wet was great, so was Silverstone. Just to finish the season with a last lap, last corner pass to decide the championship. I would say we've had a pretty good F1 season.
