Congratulations on the comment from the family who's child died. That's really amazing.

I'm wondering about the comment on the flap's sharp edges (capable of a 'nice' cut) - does this really enhance the effect of the device so much that they're desired so sharp?

I think looking at F1 cars there are aero bits on the car that are rounded and other bits that are sharp. Both must have specific purposes. I believe that rounded edges would enable a smooth air flow while the sharp edges would modify the flow and prevent vortices from occurring in the boundary layer close to the body.

    Hi

Yes. It's amazing how a very small difference has a measurable effect. It's very interesting to see that Michelotto even designed these fences differently side to side. Note how the right side fence has a forward facing thin return at the top edge whereas the left one doesn't. The reason the Fence on the SUV is more rounded and moulded in is pedestrian safety. It would work better if it had sharper edges. The 8C's fence has sharp edges but it's on the underside of the car and peloton's Porsche's fence is made from a pedestrian safe material.

Watch this video of P 4/5 in the wind tunnel. We're trying to optimise front brake cooling and minimise front wheel well vortices and turbulence. Note how between runs we're fine tuning the edge of the wheel well fit with a file to adjust the flow.
Very small modifications made a surprisingly large difference.

Round/sharp - sure. But to the point that it can actually easily cut you?

And maybe I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that F1 was on a completely different level as far as high tech and precision goes...

point is dear Nick, holy grail is not a term typical referred to in the "plural"...or on a monthly basis depending on what is on the sale list.

good to see you back in your role as chief "sackey lackey"...you were terribly missed from a standpoint of entertainment.

jealous is such an ugly emotion.

"sackey lackey" - thats very good
im sure you've been like a little child squirming in his seat whilst waiting to use that one
or do i just think that because of your childish jibes and so forth

now im sure i wouldnt be missed if i never posted again but im damn sure you wouldnt be missed either if you vanished.
however its a fact that when Joe doesnt post for more than a day or so there are people asking where he is and missing his valuable advice and knowledge.
so heres a tip for you, the whole Sackey bashing thing - give it a rest, its old and boring and aside from your sycophantic little group of hangers on no ones interested

Jealousy ? Care to explain ? This should be good.....

"sackey lackey"...read the quote above...draw your own conclusions

As far as being missed, you're right, you wouldn't be.
The second bit was a bit off though...

    Dear Sfumato:

I humbly accept the concept that you are right and I am wrong.

I was wrong to listen to you and believe that RB Aviators belong in the 80s. I have been provided by both photographic and written evidence of same. I am reliably informed that were popularized after their 1937 debut as manufactured for the fighting men & women in the army and the navy, and remained popular in the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90,s and heck, are still popular. Therefore, you are wrong in suggesting they belong in the 80s. But I was also wrong for believing you... see, I understand the concept of being wrong sometimes. In fact, Im wrong a lot.

I have posted evidence of RB Aviators popularity throughout the decades, and I have posted them slowly so that you will not miss any of them. You may recognize some of the people wearing them. The first one is of some General guy. Thank goodness I now have all this information, in the nick of time too as I was about to dispose of them!

    Respectfully Submitted,
    Joe

Air fence useful at lower speeds or not? Seems proven useful

You brought up physician, not me. I never said what I did, but since you brought up your sycophants, and asked about my patients, I replied.BTW, there are several physicians in this thread, none of which brought it up.
Divert from original issue. I liked RB's way back. Not the point, merely an observation. Thanks for the info.

If you spent as much time looking at aerodynamics, you could tell the others, not me, that the fence isn't for posing.

I'm happy Gurney is a neighbor, that clearly makes you more of an authority as you implied.
So are you standing by your original statement about aerodynamic devices or not? Simple question to answer, specific.

BTW, now Jati's car is on market, I'd look at it. Seems you have it, hopefully not exclusively. You never know who your customer might be.

    Question open.

You know, a funny thing happens to my CGT above 75mph...this wing thingy moves up on its own...

Now the germans can be accused of many things, but poseurs seem quite far from their mantra of engineering excellence...its form follows function isn't it ?

Maybe the engineers all got sloshed one night and said "vee must make a wingy thingy that goes up...it vill be yooosless, but who cares ja ?"

    :)

I think Joe's problem is that he doesn't drive the cars as Enzo intended. Legal speeds? lol... He has no idea how we drive the cars in Texas. :)

pretty impressive the amount of downforce this "useless" device creates. interesting also that the engineers had to install a mechanism that would reach full extention quicker than originally designed as the car outaccelerated the needed downforce with the original configuration.

dumb question but is the reason the left size is different from the right to account for driver weight or something else?
