Beautiful and thorough job: what paint did you use for the console?
I mean what brand and shade of grey did you use: I have been trying to match it but I am having a hard time with it.

I was affraid someone asked me that... Well, I used a base called polichrome wich is grey and bright metalic, then I added some black little by little till I matched the right shade... It was not difficult but without the polychrome I guess it is not that simple.

Hope you find polychrome in the US. Next monday I'll take a photo of the can and then you look for it.

I think I should add that this is a job for relaxed people.
One advice, if by chance you don't have the right tool to take the strong brake clamp on the main circle switchs don't mess with them. They are supported by ONE plastic bridge that it is not that strong, if you brake it...
You can still remove the old material and place the new panel, paying attention to the edges. The Ricambi part is exactly the size of the acrilic base. Place it correctly on the upper edge and then with your finger press it till the bottom edge and corners. You can use soapy water. But I recommend you don't. This way you get it sticked at first and forever.

but I'd like a set of directions to disassemble all of that panel - I need to replace the ashtray hinge, and thought the entire center console needed to come apart (your pics show it doesn't - which is great!).

Nice work-------------If the knobs need refinsihed--which most do---you have no choice but to remove them from the panel...You need a set of snap ring pliers or send it to the expert----

 

I can attest to what 285ferrari says. Robbie is a great guy and has developed a process that cures all the sticky interior bits on our Ferraris.
Robbie did my 355 interior pcs. and it made the difference between selling and not selling my car.

But from my experience doing this kind of jobs (some 6 Ferrari and 4 Maserati 3200 Gt...) just one 456 needed the knobs refinished. Even though I just wanted to advice that it can be "dangerous" for someone without the right ring plier to do the job.
And even if you have the right tool and relaxed mind it can be tricky also! So pay attention.

And you're right about the issue selling it and not selling it!!

 

To take the all ashtray assembly out you need to take the console out. There are four small screws that fix it to the console.
But to take out the console is not that difficult. I advice some care on the leather around it!!
First you take the Sony interface, then the A/C unit with care, there 2 stud nuts, unscrew them. With care an paying attention to the leather around just oscilate a bit the console and push it back and up... Voilá!!
Of course the first thing to do is to take the nice polished gear lever ball!!

PLEASE IF YOU ARE NOT CONFORTABLE DOING THIS JOB, LEAVE IT TO THE EXPERT ROBBIE... SINCE I'M TO FAR AWAY!!

 

Your right about the 456, I have only had to refinish knobs on one silver one versus the 100 or so panels I have done of the black ones. For some reason the silver holds up better than black knobs...

- that sprayer looks extra....any substitutes suggested, I know of a way to purchase 'DIY-Spray-cans'...so, just wondering.

Well... Let's say that in 3 hours you do the full job!!... As long as you have the will, the know-how, the right materials and the excellente Ricambi part... The cost ? Something in the region of 200€.

Regarding the spray cans...well can be possible but in my opinion any professional car painter, with the right gun can do it much better... Or yourself with a good air-brush and compressor.

 

Well done, looks like a job I would do, it is amazing how you can tidy up an older car properly for not a lot of money and have satisfaction in doing it also. I love the 456 console, happy motoring.
