"Slumdog Millionaire".......

I very much agree. My wife didn't like it, but she tends not to like movies that
have 'cringe moments'. All good movies must have one thing: A good story that
is well told. Slumdog does this in style.

Another fabulous movie recently - Coraline (but ONLY in 3D) - not a 'kids' movie
so much, and is simply amazing.

I wondered about "Slumdog". Normally, I hate the movies that win all of the awards but perhaps I'll give this one a shot.

 

I'm with you on that. Up until about ten years ago, the number of awards a movie received was a good barometer. But now, the 'best' (hack...choke..cough) movies are still picked and the awards are given (They have to be awarded somewhere!), but the flicks are so bad, the barometer of 'whats good' has become a useless tool!

As a side note, while I was driving in LA yesterday, I was listening to a local talk show about the Hollywood film industry. What a train wreck! Something like a hundred and sixty movies were filmed in Hollywood last year and the number for 2009 is three! WOW! Are the budgets being cut that bad to where the studio's are cost prohibited?

 

I thought slumdog was good but not 8 oscar wins good. that said, well worth seeing.

 

I saw it on an airplane the day after the Oscars. The small screen probably didn't do it justice. It was a good movie, but I'm not sure I think it was 'best picture' material. I would suggest seeing it on the big screen.

 

For me, it's one of the best movies so far i saw this year. The best in fact.

 

Overrated. The plot is absolutely predictable, the characters are all pretty much 2-dimensional cardboard. It portrays India in a way that will KILL any tourism ideas. One really has to suspend disbelief that all these coincidences and happenstances occur in just the right way to get to the ending. It has a pretty high body count for a "feel good movie", including child-maiming and whoredom. And then, just for no good reason at all, let's have a giant dancing number at the end after everything has worked out.

I guess it was just the year for Hollywood to feel all multicultural, but really -- this movie wasn't all that.

I will give it credit: it's filmed beautifully, and gives a vivid look into a culture that is truly foreign to most of its viewers.

Funny you should mention this, it's been playing at our theater for over 2 months, long before it was recognized by the masses. My general manager (hes a bit of a case), kept on going on about how it was best movie of 2008, telling customers they're gonna love it, etc etc, and he even went so far as to betting on it at the Academy Awards!

When it started it was in one of our medium sized theaters(where most start), and he eventually bumped it up to our biggest theater because of the increasing crowds. In that largest theater it was getting sold out every week, right up until a couple other theaters in town got it, and now its settled down a bit, but still definitely brings them in!

As for the movie itself, I haven't seen it in its entirety(watched about the first 50 minutes), but i do go and sneak peeks at it when I'm working, so I know the plot line, and, of course, the great Bollywood dance scene at the very end. Plus my girlfriend went and saw it (without me!!), so now I don't have anyone to watch it with.

The music's great too, I've downloaded a couple songs, the famous "Jai Ho" and another lesser known one called "Aaj Ki Raat", which is the better of the two IMO.

Anyway, definitely recommended, Danny Boyle's best since Trainspotting.

 

I guess people in India have been upset that this movie portrays their country in an unfavorable light....well, i just got back from India and i can tell anyone that it is EXACTLY what it's like. It highlights the underbelly of their society mush like "american gangster" does; but from my personal experience it's pretty much spot on.

 

PS...great movie.

Saw the movie, Definitly a GREAT written movie, Deserved the Academy Award. I liked it, Didn't love it. Would recommend it. The dancing scene at the end, I guess it's traditional in India to dance at the end of the show??? So I hear???????

 

Not traditional...all the Bollywood movies have a soundtrack like a regular movie, except the actors/actresses or whomever dances around and sings. So it's basically every movie has a soundtrack and a "music video" so to speak.

 

The movie is "OK" but not great.... I mean, it's not Shawshank Redeption or Schindlers List or The Godfather. It's better than most of the other crap like Transformers and Rambo 12 and whatever other crap hollywood pumps out, but it's not one of the all time greats.


I'm not getting the folks saying it's the best movie they have seen in many years... do you folks see many movies?

 

You may not have wanted to go there but the simple fact is India has a large and burgeoning tourist industry.

 

in India, Delhi, Agra and everything in between. India has rich culture and so many interesting aspects, but the math is quite simple: too many people chasing the same resources. It cracks me up that people toss India and China together, as anyone that has been to both will attest. China is WAY more advanced...but we are getting a little OT. good movie.

 

I don't go to movies any more, so I guess I'm not really entitled to an opinion, but the story about "Slumdog" reminds me of the original release of "The Gods Must Be Crazy". Everyone was talking about it, it was so fresh and unusual, you just had to go see it, etc. So I went to see it, and it was dull and unremarkable. It had some good moments, but what's the big deal??? Is there any comparison there, or am I talking about two totally different things?

In some respects the plotline reminded me of "Usual Suspects", with the plot being revealed as a series of flashbacks triggered by the dialogue of two characters.

 

I think I'll wait for the porno version, perhaps Slumdoggystyle Anallionaire?

 

I been to both countries and stayed in both places, and also have good friends who run large business there. I would say in my opinion.. CHINA and India are on the same level. I been going to India, and China for the past 8years.
