any thoughts on the new h&k 45 compact? i am going to look at either that or a 1911 knock-off.

I have the HK45C, and like it a lot. Pretty much a USP inside, so a USP compact may be cheaper and meet the same need. It does not have the Batman grip of the fullsize, which I prefer. Plenty of 8-round magazines around, but the 10-rounders are pricey and hard to find. The 8-rounder with a flat bottom makes the gun even smaller, since the supplied magazines have the pinky lip bottom plate. I believe the magazines are interchangeable with the USP compact, but not fullsize USP. The 10 rounder HK45 magazine fits, but sticks out about an inch from the bottom.

Much different than a 1911 knock off (size), so get both! I may be biased, because I only have HKs.

I had the opportunity to shoot an H&K45 and it was an absolutely beautiful gun. Smooth, controllable, balanced, accurate. Makes Glock feel like a truck. Fantastic firearm.

My Mom owns a 1911 Gold Cup Match and she loves the gun as well.

Both great choices, but from personal experience, I don't think you can beat the H&K.

Wouldn't steer you away from the H&K, but why not a Kimber if you are looking for a 45? Or even the Springfield XD45ACP? With the Springfield you get a 10 round standard magazine (+1 in the chamber) and have the option to go 13+1 with the grip extension magazine plus you are looking at a MSRP on the Springfield of about $530.00 or so for the compact and that's about half of what you would pay for the H&K.

Like I said I wouldn't steer you away from the H&K I have shot it and it is a really nice .45...plus Jack Bauer uses an H&K, so how bad can they be? :)

+1 on the Kimbers PLUS they have a few compact models you might want to look at. Ultra Crimson Carry II is high on my list. It is TINY, but looks great and has the integrated laser. Good link above to get an idea. I recommend going to a gunshop and holding one, it is really put together right and small.

The Ultra Crimson Carry is a very nice gun!

I've thought about an XDm or similar high-capacity gun as well. They probably won't be available much longer. ;)
