Guys, was looking at a 75 308GT4 VIN #10622 in Los Angeles owner says he had it since 94 but he has no maint records and no idea when the belts were changed or other maint. like even the oil change. he thinks it has 60k miles with a replaced speedo that shows 92k miles so we don't know the mileage. new windshield drama = new crappy paint job = red this time GT4 registry shows no info. he was put out when I asked him to pull it out of the garage, when I was done looking it over, I wanted to get a PPI and he was totally put out. wouldn't let me test drive it either Figure he's hiding something but don't know what thanks Chuck
All red flags.....RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll look and see if I have any info on that car... JIM
Agreed - too many red flags. It's a down economy and low-end Ferraris are going for low prices. But the price of service is recession-proof. Buy a good one at a now-low price and don't touch crap. The service will KILL YOU financially.
Sounds bad. Style, personability and demeanor are important in these situations - so long as you were pleasant/courteous and reasonable in the dialog a ferrari seller/owner shouldn't have any problem with you checking the car out reasonably. There are certainly a lot of tire kickers out there when it comes to ferraris so as long as you appear (and are!) serious, personable, and genuine about your interest in potentially buying the car then the seller should also act similarly reasonably and give you some room/opportunity to give it a fair inspection.
No way I'd buy any car that the owner won't let you test drive, and take for a PPI. (Although I guess anything is possible if the price is right! Tell him you are ok with no test drive or PPI - if he's ok with $3K.)
You need to be able to check clutch/tranny and to be able to check for running issues. If the guy has no interest in enabling you to do due dilligence, then you can politely ask him how he expects anyone to be able to gauge what needs to be addressed. Hence, you can ask how he expects anyone to come to a purchase decision without any records, inspection or personal running analysis. Run, don't walk...unless we're talking a $8000 car.
This is the problem when some clean GT4 are pushing up the overall market. Anyone with a piece of crap GT4 thinks theirs is worth $30K too.
Hey cdatte, check eBay, there are at least 2 that look pretty good with private party sellers right in your backyard in San Diego right now. The Euro in Imperial Beach looks worth checking out.
According to the database that doesn't exist (inside joke there....only a couple will get) SN#10622 Originally Blue/Boxer w/Tan interior 1/78 documented to be in California 5/94 FS in California $31.5 New Paint That's all I have.... JIM
I have 8 I'm tracking at the moment most of the ebay ones are all 30k+ and are out of sight, got 4 in texas and 3 in canada and 2 in NY I've looked at 5 so far and drove them and they were in need of TLC at high end prices
thanks, I'm wondering if it was a lawyer payoff and the current owner didn't really own it like he said. it does have new paint but it wasn't done very well
I'm tracking them all the san diego car wants too much all the ebay's in the last month are not meeting reserve and are selling for on average 22.5 ish for 74/75's
The best advice I can give regarding the purchase of a 308 GT4 (and the same applies to ALL Ferraris and ALL collector cars): Be patient! There are plenty of great cars out there. You just need to find the right car being sold by the right seller. Given the economy (including the Dow/NASDAQ) someone will be selling a fantastic car for well under market value soon.
