    Hi -

Is there any downside to ordering a new Ferrari with a current Maserati paint color? Is the quality the same? Would this substantially affect resale value? I'm looking for a shade of silver that isn't available from Ferrari but seems to be from Maserati.

    Thanks for any insight!

    Best,
    Jim

    A very attractive color.
As to value, in the short term the good looks will enhance its value. In the long term its a unique, factory authentic, car and should have a rarity value. Important thing is, of course, that you like it now.
    Enjoy.

Throughout the course of collector car history, a rare/special order color very rarely affects value. Most cases where color affects value are related to iconic/recognizable colors, such as a '77 Trans Am in Starlite Black with gold bird is worth about twice as much as any other color (thanks to Smokey and the Bandit.) '70 and '71 Plymouth and Dodge cars are worth more painted in High Impact (eg: Go Mango, Tor Red, Plum Crazy) colors.

Ferraris have tended to be less affected by factory color, but still see some extremely small reflection of the old standard rules, such as: red is easiest to sell, "stick around" brown tends to bring a little less. For the most part, any mainstream color (silver, gray, darker blues, white, black...) are all safe bets for the long term. Trendy colors (teal, bright oranges and greens, purple) often have trouble 20 years out.

Maserati and Ferrari probably source the paint from the same supplier, so I wouldn't worry about quality.

And there are plenty of examples of cars painted in special-order colors from other brand lines. I collector I know has a '57 T-Bird painted originally in a Lincoln color. It's pretty...and rare...but not really any more or less valuable, which is probably the way it should be.

If you saw the episode of "Ultimate Factories" on NatGeo channel which focused on the Ferrari factory, you might have noticed both Ferraris AND Maseratis lined up for the paint biz together. So, I wouldn't worry about quality, and if it looks half as good as the 599 shown here, it will be beautiful as well as subtly "special" to you. Go for it!

Thanks, everyone. All good input. I visited the factory a few years ago and saw some QPs being painted alongside 599s. But I wasn't sure if the process or paint quality was identical (supplier, number of coats, etc). I'm not too worried about the value part - this will be for a California and I'm thinking grigio alfieri. The discussion on that color and car is in the California section. I'm just looking for pros/cons of doing it in this section. So far, seems like I'll go for it.

    thanks!

Is that interior a salmon pink? The last time I saw a gray/salmon pink combo was on the showroom floor of a chevy dealer in 1954. I actually liked it which is why I remember.

Ferrari just lists it as Rosso. It also was a special order, but this is a Ferrari Color. It looks more like Terra Cotta to me.

Judging from Ferrari paint quality, I wouldn't be worried if they accidentally had the paintwork done at the Mercedes or Audi factory. IMO, Ferrari paint quality has gone from a joke (up through the '80s) to solidly mediocre.

And as far as color, if it's a slightly different shade of silver I wouldn't expect it to affect the value much. If it was sky blue or lime green then yes, I would expect a major hit in resale value.

Also, the California doesn't wear red especially well, so I doubt you'll take the "resale red" color penalty by getting something different.

Unfortunately even Mercedes and BMW paint quality has suffered in the last 20 years, mostly due to environmental restrictions on paint suppliers.

You can look down the side of any brand new BMW or Mercedes and see major orange peel. It is most evident on darker colors -- especially dark blue (which happens to be my fav color for BMWs right now.)

Interestingly, while Ferrari's paint has never been anything special, when my 328 was repainted, the shop owner (a Ferrari and Lambo owner himself) mentioned how amazing the primer was -- really hard.
