Those exhaust manifold ports look tiny even for a 3 liter motor!

    Great head shots...

Interesting that you have the top pic, that is Tim Gendreau's F40, my F40 and Roland's car. This was at Buttonwillow during the Forza article....

funny you should mention that...I was thumbing through that issue last week :) Very nice article documenting the "go fast and stop fast" changes you made.

the Ferrari F40 87400 engine teardown pics are some of the best ones i've ever seen!! Does anyone have more of those pics in high res? If so please post them! There are a lot of pics of the face and body of that beauty but not many of her heart...

It seems like a real high skill surgery...

    Jas -

Thanks for posting these up on fchat. The car is coming together now and I'll be posting up a link to a library of the assembly photos in the next month or so. I think you all will like photos of things like the freshly coated pistons, the new clutch, that type of stuff. As for the post commenting on the small size of the exhaust ports...everything on this engine looks tiny to me, the ports, the pistons, the valves...looks like a couple of small inline-4 motorcycle engines sharing a common crankcase and crankshaft. The only things I can find that look a bit oversize relative to the engine are the size of the stock turbos. The whole thing looks so very old school - hard to believe it was first launched in the late 80's, as much of the details look like carryovers from the 70's. All the carbon/kevlar work is about as modern as it gets. The frame is typical hand-welded tubular steel in oval, round and box sections. The welds are clearly done by hand, plenty of uneven spots, clearly strong, but definitely not done for looks, only joint integrity.

....and it all comes together to produce scintillating thrust !

Its really interesting that you mentioned the quality of the welds...when Gordon Murray saw them he mentioned that if someone welded like that at McLaren, they would have been fired on the spot :)

Looking forward to the pics Ron, they will be very informative. Thanks for taking the time to put them together.

Gordon Murray is certainly a god among automotive engineers so his weld comment is telling. He probably would not have approved of the funky hand-work on laying up clear coat and joining sections on the F40's carbon/kevlar tub either...(sorry about my thumb in the photo)
