Looking for (at least) a decent long term rental in a nice area for somebody, and hope Fchat can help just a bit. More importantly, are there parts of town to avoid?

You mean that godforsaken town in the middle of nowhere? The part of town to be avoided is all of China Lake. Maybe live in Ridgecrest? Good luck with that one.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, I don't know where you're from, but it's got to be a heck of a lot better than China Lake Ca....If you've ever been there you'd know what I mean...I'm just being honest...

    Good luck,

    Chris.

Ridgecrest is "close" enough TBH. The homestead here in MI is fantastic in a great small city; close enough to the Metro Detroit to do just about anything in a day. Local economy is truly in the dumps; and requires the move...

Don't believe everything you read. I live there and love it! Lots of open roads, close to any kind of recreation you can dream of, affordable housing (especially for California), and still a small town atmosphere. You will enjoy it here if you like to get out to see and do things. However, you won't like it if it's the night life you're looking for.
