Im not really a fan of luxury cell phones like Vertu ( other then a couple Ferrari editions ) but this looks to be crazy.

Celebrated Swiss vanguard watchmaker Ulysse Nardin has partnered with the European firm, SCI Innovations, to create the world's first hybrid smart phone: the Chairman.

Inherently green, this smart phone pairs cutting-edge kinetic technology with the pedigree of the 163-year-old timepiece innovator.

The Chairman will be launched the end of March at Baselworld 2009 at Ulysse Nardin’s booth.

While details are limited, it has been confirmed that the Chairman will be able to use any mobile phone service provider in the world and includes several components never seen before in a smart phone.

It will incorporate a Ulysse Nardin designed kinetic rotor system which is blended into the mechanical and aesthetical design of the smart phone. This smart-phone is hand-assembled under the strictest guidelines mandated by Ulysse Nardin.

I saw that on gizmodo the other day. Pretty crazy. However, I highly doubt it'll be useable on any carrier in the world, as different networks use completetely different technology. I'd be really surprised if they managed to fit a bunch of different chipsets inside that sucker. Oh, and is the manual wind really enough to charge a cell phone battery? Cool anyway though.

If the phone is an unlocked GSM it could work all over the world. I really don't think the winder will charge it fully.... we'll have more info at the end of the month @ Baselworld 2009

It could work all over the world, BUT - not on any carrier in the world. For example, Verizon and Sprint are CDMA-based networks. That's one of the reason the iPhone (even unlocked) won't work on their networks.

Right. As an employee of a cellphone company. I assure you that it will be a challenge at best to get it compatible. Although I must admit it is a very cool phone.

The back look's better then the front

"Yeah, we'd seen those fine mechanical workings from the back, but Ulysse Nardin has just taken the wraps of its entire Chairman handset, which they bill as a "hybrid smart phone" -- and actually seem to mean it. Ulysse Nardin surprisingly hasn't skimped on specs here, with a 2.8-inch multitouch screen, finger print reader for phone unlock, 5 megapixel camera, WiFi and the inclusion of an email app and a browser. There's also that fancy kinetic rotor system for passive charging of the phone, but no word on how much battery life that will actually get you. Ulysse Nardin is currently showing off the phone in Rose Gold, Rose Gold & Blue, Rose Gold & Steel, Stealth Black and Steel & Blue trims, so there should be plenty of options to set you apart from your other billionaire friends. The device is currently on display at BASELWORLD; no word on price, but if you have to ask..."
