Wow Jim. I didn't know you have such a collection! Do you ever show it off to local dreamers? Hey, was it you I saw in a blue Lola T7 on (i think it was) 684 near white plains a few years ago?

Unfortunately, I would FAIL this Thread! My Bad!!!! I never drive my cars. I look at them everyday like art. But rarely take them out. They are ALWAYS spotless. I feel guilty taking them out, getting them dirty then putting them away. I really need to change my mindset. Especially after reading all these posts! Good for you guys. ENJOY!

 

With a collection like yours I figured that you drove a different Ferrari everyday.

Armen: Im right there with you nowadays. I hardly ever drive the cars at this point in time, except a quick half-hour blast only on the crispest of California weekend mornings once in a rare while. But there is a reason for it and I know its exactly the same for you at the moment. A young family and priorities which go like this:

1. Family.
2. Business.
3. Cars, a poor third.

My oldest is going on 17, he needs me now more than ever, and I love the fact that I can be there when needed. But all in good time, because when these guys fly the coop my wife and I wont know what to do with ourselves and then, hello cars!

BTW, I firmly belive that even though you don't drive your cars right now, you are as much of an enthusiast as anyone posting here who does!

I must confess, it wasn't always this way for me. Some examples among many are:

The summer of 1989 in Countach LP500S 12515 where I logged 6,000 miles from May to September! 10,000 miles that year.

1995 in Countach 12562, 4,000 miles.

The summer of 1998 in Ferrari F40 86640 I logged 3,000 miles from June till September (car pictured below), and I drove it most days in that period.

Spring 2002 we did a one-day trip of 765 miles from Orange County up to the Wine Country & back in our lime green Miura SV 5064 (also pictured below) dawn to dusk motoring - heck we HAD to be back before dark, the Miura's lights didn't work

Driving is what the cars are for. But the main thing is to posses them and care for them, and for this phase of life fussing with them in between rare drives has its own pleasure. Armen I'm sure you understand...

Seattle to Monterey in my Gallardo for Concorso in 07, then back home again afterwards. Day trip both times. About 750-800 miles each way. I also drove the car home from LA to Seattle previously when I bought it, but I stopped to sleep somewhere in Oregon on the way after flying to LA that morning from SEA.

When I had my 360 I drove it about 400 miles or so in a day on a couple occasions. 10,000 miles in about 4 years. The Gallardo has also gone about 10,000 miles in the last 4 years or so. Did I mention that I work from home and travel (by plane) about 200 days a year, so I'm rarely home to spend time in my cars?

My old cars don't get exercised nearly as much, but hopefully I'll be able to spend more time in them in the future.

There is no right or wrong here but to enjoy them. I enjoy looking at them as well. I also enjoy showing them to others (Concours) and reuniting them with the people who really drove them. As for dirt, there is some dirt that I almost hate washing off...

i guess it must be a euro thing but i have driven my fast cars for extreme distances many times. the 456 and the 512tr have both been back and forth to rome and london and points in between in one day multiple times, so 900 km at once. as a side note, i once drove a mercedes s class from geneva to budapest non stop save for gas and meal stops...thats about 1400km. and i plan to do the same with the f40 when i finally get one !

btw, i have 3 kids....every one of them has been in the cars for trips innumerable times, either in their baby seats or belted in. nothing like taking your daughter to the jr high prom in a ferrari; nothing like taking your son down to monaco or silverstone for the grand prix in a ferrari and even driving the course !; nothing like taking your 3 kids for an ice cream on a sunday and parking your ferrari right in front ...etc. dont let imaginary issues get in the way of LIVING ! dont put off till tomorrow what you should do today...

 

jim, you have only listed how many miles YOU have covered in one of your cars in one day...and yet i seem to remember that at least one of yours has done about 3200 miles in one day, admittedly with somebody else in the driver's seat....a man named hulme if my memory serves..

 

Amazing pics of Amazing cars guys. I love looking at pics of gorgeous cars in nice places (such as these) even if they're not mine. But thats just something to aim for later in life. Also great to read about everyone using their cars as much as possibleand having fun .

 

My best "1 day" would be 950 miles from Indianapolis back to Boston, done within 24 hours, 550 miles straight after the F1 race to Harrisburg PA (one stop for gas and gas station food). Then a straight shot back with no stopping the following morning. All in the CS - we would run 430+ miles on a tank on the highway. The whole trip was 3K in 10 days, Boston-Montreal-Boston-Niagara Falls-Chicago-Indianapolis-Boston.

 

How bout 1000 mies in 18 hours! Yep, but.... it was in a Honda minivan. Hope to do the same drive when I get a Ferrari!

 

exactly what i was saying when i ran up on him on the 101!we both were heading to VCR!!i was almost ashamed i was in a mere Gallardo and not an F-car!in all my years in LA that was the first one ive seen driven!!

You're quite correct. Over a 24 hour period about 42 years ago these two, Bruce McLaren and Mark Donohue, drove a car I now own over 3200 miles.

As a life long Fcar lover the Porsche 959 will always hold a special place in my heart as a car enthusiast. Even if I had an Enzo or F40 I would ask if we could swap rides for the cruise/drive even if it was for just one mile just so I could experience a 959 from the drivers seat.

and the cars been sitting awhile....remember to change your fuel filter!!this pic is from 1990 and is somewhere off the hwy between Coalinga and King City!cant remember the hwy number but we took 33 from Taft up to Coalinga and went towards KC..its always been our "cannonball" route cause its a great road with lots of fun sections and elevation changes with little law enforcement (back then)for the most part but youre screwed if you break or crash and need help!!!anyway my friend Steve assured me his Daytona was ready for a road trip and when i asked him if he changed his FF he replied no but im not worried about it!!from Taft till this picture was taken we rarely were under 100mph except when going thru the few towns along the way and often well above 125 on a few stretches!!it was during on of those moments when i look in the mirror and see him flashing his lights and pulling over..so i get it slowed down and turn around and motor back to find him already under the hood..no fuel flow...
clogged fuel filter!!so i just pulled out my lawn chair had some beers and watched him play mechanic rubbing it in the whole time,asking him if he was an auto club long distance tow member etc!!he had it back running quite quickly and the rest of the trip was your typical monterey fun!!does anybody remember "the club"??
