Ok get this (I thought it had to have been some kind of a trick), the fiancé suggested that since we were thinking of going to Europe for our honeymoon next year, we should plan the trip so that we could attend an F1 event while we are there. I was shocked, and immediately thought she was BSing me. However, I was wrong, she was serious.

The plan is to spend a week in either Italy or the south of France and attend either Monza or Monaco at the beginning or end of the trip. Obviously if we choose France we would go to Monaco and if we chose Italy we'd go to Monza. Her family has a time share where they get a week where ever they want in the world where the company they bought from has a resort; as a wedding gift, they are giving us their week. They have several resorts in Italy and several in and around Nice.

The wedding is May 1, 2010 and our plans are very preliminary. Does anyone have any other suggestions I should look into? We are not set on either country and would look to other places if the opportunity works out better. She would prefer warm weather and a beach; I couldn't care less as long as there are 200mph screaming engines involved. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help.

PS: Does anyone remember when the provisional calendar for the following season comes out so we can book something before resorts fill up completely? The provisional calendar for 2010 is somewhat out now, but there are no dates set; if I was to book a place in Nice, how confident could I be that if Monaco is listed as the 5th race for 2009 and 2010, it would be around the same date?

As I recall, the provisional calendar has always come out in December. Monza and Monaco are both classic venues and I am sure many here will provide recomendations.

I missed the chance to go to Magny-cours in 2007 when I was in Lyon and I still regret it. Take advantage of you fiancee's good will and enjoy one of those races!

Your wedding date is perfect for Monaco. I would do that in a second.

By the way, does your fiance have a sister? ;)

Monza and Monaco are 2 races that don't seem to get shifted about the calendar so I think you can safely say that in 2010 Monaco will be on May 23rd and Monza will be on September 12th in 2010. The Spanish GP is likely to be on May 9th so that would probably suit your travel time the best assuming you are honeymooning straight after your wedding. My ex and I had our honeymoon based around the Italian GP and we had a great time. It was a great wedding, although a pretty poor marriage!

Monaco weather can be unpredictable - its a little early in the year for beach (above 70 deg F) to be likely in the northern Med

If you end up going to Nice, rent some nice (fast/fun) car and go to alp roads that surround Nice/Monaco. Thats where they have Monte Carlo rally. Believe me, amazing roads and scenery.

GP de Monaco coincides with Ascension, which is a major holiday weekend, so if you know when Easter falls in 2010 it should be easy to figure out the race date- obviously the Grimaldis have sufficient pull to have the race scheduled around the holiday. I've been going every year since '92, so if you end up there, as opposed to Monza, I'd be happy to help.

Thanks for the tip, that is exactly what I thought but I wasn't sure. I'm pushing for Monaco even though the race is one of the least exciting (unless it rains like last year). I think we'd have more fun in Monaco with the night life and all. I'm not a clubber, but I think some of the events could be fun.

    Thanks everyone for your input.

Well prior to me she had no idea what F1 was, but I am slowly educating her. She is not taking well to the early AM races though. Where as getting up at whatever early hour on a Sunday to watch a race is fun to me, it appeals to her less than eating glass.

You're welcome Mark - hope it was of some help. Great restaurant where we ate in Monaco just down a pedestrian walkway to the left of pit out is the Bilig, 11 Rue Princess Caroline. If you want some suggestions from the "locals", I'll email Kelly (Allan's wife) for her suggestions. Headed to Barcelona next week for the LMS race; Spa LMS in May; LeMans in June; Algarve LMS in July; Nurburgring LMS in August; probably Silverstone LMS in September; Petit and Laguna Seca.

    Congratulations!

    Carol
