driving the 355 for about 1800kms through the range for several days, finally roll up to the door and all of a sudden the exhaust note changes to a deeper rumble and it starts to run rough. I took the following actions:

    -Identified the malfunctioning cylinder
    -Checked for spark (lots)
-swapped injector with other car (still same problem)
-Changed plug just in case (still same problem)
    -No engine light (yet)

There is no knocking but power in low revs is slightly hesitant. Higher revs and power band appears normal.
very slight tick but could be injectors doing their job (and my paranoya about a sticky valve)

    Guidance would be appreciated.

You could have a failed/failing catalytic converter.

Thanks man but the cats are new and it does this light pop, pop, pop thing unless I disengage the (offending) cylinder. I just did the midnight test thing on the plug wires and they appear to be arcing at the block at all 4 banks on the right hand side.
When I took the airbox off the related throttle body had burnt black film on the flute but it blows no smoke... I'm stumped...

Time for a compression test. Could be a bent valve.

I don't think so, it would sound like a kitchen full of broken dishes if it were mechanical... Compression has got to be good because it pulls strong through the revs once it gets going. Once it heats up it however, at idle it the sound through the exaust sound gets worse.

If you're saying that the wires (possibly the extenders) are arcing to the block I think you found your problem.

Thanks G filters are new (and K&N) 6th tank of premo fuel so unlikely.
Thanks Walt, I'm swapping those tonight I'll keep you posted.

You said you saw some arching, have you tried swapping plug wires from one side to another to see if the problem jumps sides?

I would also have a look at the condition of the wiring on the back of the pins for the fuel injector clips on the wiring harness . Pull back the rubber boots and have a look. Ferrari wiring isn't all that great.

If you eliminate spark and fuel I would suspect a valvespring. They do not necessarily make noise and may even pass a compression test. Performing a running compression test (remove schrader from comp tester and monitor compression while running and compare to other cylinders) will likely confirm the concern.

    Possible.

From the black that you observed in the throttle body I would suspect an intake valve.

I had that same symptom on my 328 and it was an intake valve. No strange noises, no smoke, no oil consumption. Just an intake valve not sealing properly.

I will change the wiring with the other car tonight, if it is the valve seating issue, can you adjust that yourself or is that head/valve damage problems.

I would recommend a compression and leak down test. That's what I did to diagnose where the problem was. It will allow you to know if it is a valve problem (intake or exhaust), rings or head gasket. A confirmed valve problem will most likely require head removal. How many miles does it have?

    Wire swap - no difference
Intakes- almost too clean as if washed with gas constantly (intake valves)
plug- gas soaked-sparking strong -- blackened and gunked up
    coil- sparking strong
    WTF!!!

Ok ... so i'm stupid. It's burning way too rich so one of the sensors is directing more fuel to be burned.fouling the plug and Heated one of the cats cherry red. I'll find out which sensor tomorrow.Hopefully I didn't wreck the cat.

I think it is solved but i will keep you posted. thanks for the guidance so far.

Have you checked exactly which cylinder is causing the miss fire? You can do this by removing the wires to the injector clips above the spark plug area just on top of the block. There is one per cylinder and they clip on and off. You will be able to tell which one is causing the problem by revs not dropping and then look to the cause.
i had a similar problem and it was as simple as some dirt lodged in the spark plug journal that was causing an intermittent short of the spark plug to the block. Mechanic cleaned this area out carefully and car was like new.

That's the first thing I did. It is a sensor that is giving the computer wrong info and flushing with fuel at a choke type level. I think I fried a cat last night. I will have to fix that as well once I diagnose which sensor it is.

Are you saying the sensor is compensating and making it rich, or the sensor is defective, and causing the richness? Pre-cat O2 sensors?

If you are talking o2 sensors there are only 4 one before the cat and one after on each side from what i remember. There are standard bosch ones but they need to be retro fitted as they are 1 wire short but are a lot cheaper tham oem. A good autoelectrician/mechanic can retrofit for you. They are about $90 in australia about 1/3 the price of oem ones.

I'm thinking now that it is a compression issue.

Sudden loss of compression is likely a broken valve spring.
