Oil Filter for a 550

Over the years Ferrari has changed the part number for the oil filter on a 550 from 141383 to 151323 and now to 206166, I have been given two UFI part numbers, 2328400 and 2328401, could anyone help me please with the correct UFI number and the difference between the filters.

 

I could not find any thing listed under those two numbers, if you put 6 in front of those numbers you will be directed to a different part like glove box. who gave you those two numbers. The upgrade number for oil filter for 550 is 206166.

Had a look at your link, the UFI part number on the picture shows 2328401,
wonder what the difference is between this and a 2328400 ?

Ok having Ferrari part numbers, but is the part delivered the correct one or am I being to careful ?, 2328400 is the filter listed for 456, 550 and 575, but when delivered a 2328401 comes in a 2328400 box, can only guess UFI have updated some aspect of this filter, well it has been around for some time now.

 

The current 206166 is 23.284.01, as pictured. There has been no supersession or suggested alternative from Ferrari that I'm aware of.

 

Is there an alternative to UFI?

 

Dave- When I bought the 575M, I expected it to still come with the old Fram 2804 filters with the supposed anti-flow-back valve. They always leaked like a sieve anyway when I changed them.

I get the need when the mouth of the filter is mounted facing down, where gravity will force the oil out of the filter, but the Maranello filters are on their sides.

 

Is there any reason that one should avoid using old stock 151323 (UFI 2328400) ?

 

I sent an email to UFI asking what the differences between 23.284.00 and 23.284.01 and they replied "there are no differences, they are the same filter , but in our Aftermarket catalogue is available with the part number 23.284.00"

 

Yes. MSW team John, Dave, and I are using canton billet oil filter bodies with replaceable elements. There are different sizes. The other guys I think are using 6" bodies and I'm using the 4" body closer to a stock size #25-284

Does anyone know the specifications of the UFI filter? Thread size, dimensions, flow rate, microns of filtration etc?

Reason why I ask is that Aston Martin has a proprietary filter made right here in Minnesota by Donaldson corporation. Many tried to find the source, then alternates...and most were scary proposals. Not the same quality. We finally came across a Ford Racing filter with very impressive published specifications and same dimensions. One of the guys decapped both, and the Ford Racing filter actually proved superior! I am now using them on my DB7, while depleting stock of my AM filter on the 9....

Perhaps there is a high quality US filter that could be used?

 

Johnny it is very possible you can check the specs on the one I posted. That's the trhead size and the gasket filter base size needed. A KN performance model will fit with the right thread size but the gasket is closer than I would like. A filter is a filter. A ford motor is no different from Ferrari or AM. It has to take the pressure and provide decent filtration and that's about it. That said the canton filters are pretty darn good. Billet bodies and replacable guts.

Do you know if the thread is 20mmx1mm or 20mmx1.5mm? Both are out there in the market. Also need to know the bypass pressure. i would guess that it needs to be around 20PSI +/-

 

It's an M20 x 1.5 thread and there is no bypass. This is a full flow filter.

Hi John - for specifications, I was referring to the UFI spin on filter (or the Ferrari spec). The idea is to see what else might be out there with similar attributes. The next step would be a decap of a UFI and the proposed alternate.

The full flow filter you are using is superior, but most won't want to go that route, and the cost of entry is relatively high, and is a long term commitment.

BTW - Ricambi provides a pretty decent deal on their 550 oil change kit. I won't cut corners to save a few bucks. However; there are fabulous high quality filters out there that cost $10-15. If we can find an equivalent in this instance...then why not? Our Ford racing equivalent for the AM V12 turned out to be a great alternative for those that cannot or don't want to shop the AM dealer....big savings, better part and easy to source....

 

OK Johnny, I thought you were referring to the Canton. Regardless, it's the same thread coming out of the block.

As a point of interest, Ferrari uses steel male adapters with M20 x 1.5 on each end for the filter connections, and they have a hex fitting in the middle, which IIRC takes a 22mm wrench. One end screws into the aluminum block and the other end sticks out for the spin-on filter. I've included a pic of one below.

Conceivably, if you find a filter that is the absolute, ultimate piece, but it doesn't come in M20 x 1.5, you could find some different adapters and get to whatever common oil filter thread you want.

Obviously you wouldn't want to go much smaller on those threads, as that would just introduce an unnecessary restriction in the system, but an adapter with a spin-on thread of 3/4 x 16 probably wouldn't hurt, as long as the adapter wall thickness wasn't too thick.

Great idea John! If we could find an M20x1.5 to M22x1.5 then it looks like the Ford Racing CM-6731-FL820 would work here as well. I would have good confidence in the flow rate and burst pressure. And the bypass pressure is high as well. Filtering down to 12microns IIRC. These are heavy duty filters to be sure...

Anyone know where such an adapter could be sourced?

 

Amsoil used to sell a variety of them to go with their remote oil filter setups. Takes a bit of digging to find them on their website IIRC. They might only be shown on their pricelist or spare parts page.

Unfortunately, all the adapters appear to be JIC threads on one end as used for hose fittings in remote filter applications....

 

Wrong page ; try this one, down at the bottom in the section called Adapters: AMSOIL General Use Dual Remote Oil Bypass Unit

They list only the threads that they can adapt "to". You'll have to call them to ask what size threads are on the "other" end (ie that thread into their remote adapter).

 

I tried Amsoil. Took a week for a reply, only to find that they do not offer such an item. I have also tried a number of web searches to no avail.
I just bought another lot of Ford Racing filters for $12.95 apiece, and would really like to try fit these if possible. I could then keep stock of one item for my AMs as well as the 550. I have complete confidence in the quality.
Be on the lookout for something that could work.... M20x1.5 to M22x1.5 on the filter end...

 

Depending on how badly you want to do this, a good machine shop, I'm sure, could make this adapter. Start with 22mm or possibly even 7/8" hex stock, turn it down to the right diameter for threading, leaving the hex in the center, then cut the M20 threads on one end and the M22 threads on the other, then bore it for the flow.

Or.... just start with 3/4" heavy wall pipe nipples with hexes then turn them down and cut new threads.

It probably wouldn't be economical to make just 2 pieces for you, but if 5-10 of your 456/550/575/612 buddies were interested, that could be 20 pieces (2 per engine) and it might be worthwhile for a machine shop to do it.

 

While John is right everything can be made, why bother. You are not going to save any money and the billet Canton filters are awesome. In addition they are 5 hex bolts to remove the disposable filter...it just seems like a no brainer to go with Canton. Looks awesome totally heavy duty 8micron filtration cheap filter replacements. Body of filter is well under 200 at jegs.com probably cheaper and for sure less hassle than making the adapter to fit a $10 Ford filter. All the COOL kids (entire MSW team) go with these.
