I think I like the appearance of the Spider more than the Spud (16M) in every way.

Of course thats natural since I own the Spider and can't afford to trade up to a Spud!

But lets say I could and still didn't want to... Lets say I'm happy to keep the heavier interior and just want the performance upgrades.

As for handling, the easiest upgrade to make to a Spider would be the tires--Pirelli P Zero Corsa. Are there any other specific suspension upgrades that are more than mere tweaks?

As for engine, are there a few specific component upgrades, or is it practically a new engine? Is the exhaust system significantly different and if so any reason to suspect its not a direct bolt-on replacement?

Has anyone upgraded exhaust from Scud/Spud stock and liked or disliked the result?

As for weight, are there any weight savings that would be easy to bolt on, or is the main savings just the stripped interior?

Finally, I know several here have driven Spiders and Spuds back to back and reported the Spud is a much sharper drive. How much would you say is down to tires, non-tire suspension, tranny (I have and need manual BTW), engine power, engine note, and weight?

    Hi Frank,

I was chatting with the head technician from the Hong Kong Ferrari dealer. This is the exact topic we talked about. Personally I own a 430 spider and he suggests to me that Scuderia is a totally different car. Just about none of the body panels can be shared with the F430. Ferrari has started the Scuderia from the 430 race car instead of the road going 430. Scuderia is really an improved version of the 430 race car and tuned civilize enough for the road. Even though I have not driven one, but i have had experience to drive side by side with one during a sunday morning drive. I tell you, it's perfect. And I can tell the difference between a 430 and a scuderia is as big as a 360 to a 430. Also I am not sure if you have notice that 360 and 430 have a common problem. When you go beyond 230 km/h the front part of the car tend to hop, not exact hop above the ground but you will able to feel it. These problems were solved in both 360 cs and Scuderia.

I would forget about the 16M as your performance upgrade target - it is a completely different car. You like manual transmission and that alone is a massive difference to Superfast 2. There must be someone in fchat who enhanced the performance of the 430 Spider with springs, dampers, ecu, exhaust, air plenum, sports seats, optima battery.

Anyone knows about light weight battery in the Scud/Spud, is there any or just standard?
How much weight could I save by mounting an Optima or similar?

My Scud has an Optima. Will let you know about the Spud when mine arrives. No idea how much the weight savings is over a normal 430 battery. Probably more cost effective to only carry lighter passengers!!!

I don't buy that "entirely different car" or "race-car re-engineered to be street legal" promotional line. Of course thats what the salesman will say; whats the likelyhood people will start discussing his product if he says its the 7th streetcar based on the decade-old F131 chassis?

Rant off. I still want to make my very street-car F430 Spider as zippy as possible, and I think I can distill my curiousity into three seperate points:

    1) What specific parts go into the higher power?

-- haven't found any hard info at all

    2) What specific parts go into better handling?

--The Pirelli P-Zero Corsa System tires are the most extreme bias towards daily-use dry traction, sacrificing wear and probably (according to Tire Rack but not Pirelli) wet handling. From my knowlege of tires, I'm guessing that these tires alone account for 50% of the "completely different feel" people get from a 16M.

--haven't found any other hard info at all

    3) What is the real weight saving, and what parts could account for this? With aftermarket parts, is there an alternative path to weight saving?

-- According to Ferrari website the 16M is 83kg lighter than Spider.

-- Corsa Systems will total 0-6kg lighter than the various Spider tire options. *1

-- I'm getting specs for wheels and seats, though I like the look of the ones I have.

-- aftermarket battery options can save 10-12kg *3

*1: Tirerack.com has all this weight info. It gives enough info to figure out all the different P-Zeros but I wish either Pirelli or Tirerack would explain it once and for all in a single paragraph. "Corsa" seems to be a DOT-approved race tire you wouldn't want on a street car at all and that's not available in a good size for us anyway. "Corsa System" isn't a tire, its two: "Corsa Direzionale" front tires (or all 4 for front-engine/RWD cars) and "Corsa Assymetrico" rear tires on mid-/rear-engine cars. "Rosso" are just comfy tires for like an M5. "Nero" I'm not sure about but they're equal or below Rosso in the pecking order. I think the Corsa Systems look to be a much better choice for a low-mileage/sunny-weather F430.

*2: Ferrariworld.com->cars->today->8 cyl->spider->tech specs: kerb 3351lbs dry 3130lbs. 16M "click here"-->technical: kerb 3168lbs dry 2948lbs. Either kerb or dry its about 182 lbs = 83kg. OTOH, Japanese spec sheet quotes Spider at 1590kg = 3498 lbs? That is probably before carbon brakes became standard.

I need a manual, sorry! Otherwise I would have kept my GT-R. I prefer the exterior and interior of the Spider. That means I'll never have the shift speed or weight to truly match a 16M. But I'd like to know what parts would at least close the gap.
