Three of the corners on the Marina Bay street circuit which hosted Formula 1's first night race last year in Singapore have now been named.

Organisers launched a contest to ask fans to submit names for the corners, and close to 1,800 proposals were submitted.

Now Turn 1 will be called "Sheares" in relation to the Benjamin Sheares Bridge which towers over the track at that point.

Turn 7 will be called "Memorial", due to its proximity to the monument honouring civilian World War II victims, and Turn 10 will be named after Singapore's most famous cocktail, the "Singapore Sling".

"Just like any icon, the corner has to be treated with respect" says Colin Syn, deputy chairman of the Singapore GP. "Drivers have to be careful here, but it can serve as a slingshot if they tackle it well.

"I guess after the exploits of some drivers last year, there could be jokes about a Wallbanger, but we chose to name the turn after the Singapore Sling because it is known internationally and fans everywhere can relate to it instantly."

While obviously drinks and driving sends the politically wrong message, I'm glad to see new and different names for corners. I'm so tired of all the Senna or Schumacher esses. Worse yet are the simply numbered turns. Why not have a little fun.

Will that be the "obsessed with Massa" turn or the "pompous moderator corner"?

At any rate, I have to drive a track built by you. Time for a little Mexican getaway. :)

Andreaesses actually sounds clever. Me likey. :)

And if you add an endless turn a la Istanbul or the Road America caroussel you could call it the Ron-dabout.

    What's wrong with numbered turns?

    Such as, "Turn 666". ;)

I hear Fuji turn one will be called "Everyone Turn ... except Hamilton".
While turn three will be called "Massa Crossing". :D

Turn eight in Turkey -- four apex left hander, as I recall.

Last year broke the string -- so maybe Rascasse might not be renamed "Ferrari Park", after all. ;)
