My car has 44k miles on it but because of the way it was stored and ran, its 30k engine out was over the past few months. Now it is home and running better than ever. Of course with the engine out, I took the time to fix other things that needed doing and also some cosmetic work.

During this work my mechanic, who is the best in the business and has 40 years (yes, he is 60!) working on Ferrari, kept all of my used parts and presented me with a box when I picked up the car. I tossed everything in to the bin but two parts, the oil pressure hose and the rotating armature from the alternator.

Why? The hose just looked cool and the armature was such a fraking but plug pain in the ass over the years I want to frame the gods damn thing!

My question is this, when presented with your old parts, what do you keep?

Keep the receipt from Tom, toss everything else in the garbage. They're just used car parts. :)

I keep OEM stuff that's NLA, something that a concourse judge might actually look for to verify authenticity. For a 30K service, 'not much' unless there's some specialized hose clamps/metric hardware in that pile that is 'different' than something commercially available today.

If you have storage space for it, I maintain a big box of junk..

When someone asks "Is it all original?" you point to it and say "Only if you put all these burned up parts back on...."

After a few years it's a big box and you can throw stuff like burned out ANSAs in the trash....LOL!

In powerplant overhaul class at aviation mechanic school, somebody asked out loud "what happens to the old parts?" I think the teacher said they go to heaven, but I said what you should do is take them home with you and put them under your pillow. When you're fast asleep, the Overhaul Fairy will take them away and leave you the core charge.

I give them to my 4 year old son to play with. He's been carrying around my old center wheel caps now for 2 weeks.
