Jenson Button's team have hit back at allegations their pace-setting race car is illegal, as a rules row threatens to wreck the start of the new Formula 1 season.

Brawn GP and two other teams, Toyota andWilliams, have found a clever loophole in the complex rear aerodynamics regulations that makes their car faster.

If they win the opening round in Australia, on Sunday, rival teams are set to protest but Button's team-mate, Rubens Barrichello, has lashed out at Brawn's opponents saying it is just sour grapes.

    "You're asking are we legal?

When someone is behind it is easier to say your rivals are against the rules than to do better work," said the veteran Brazilian driver.

"Our team is very much within the regulations. I don't know what the fuss is about," added Williams' design genius Sam Michael.

"People are complaining rather than putting their hands up and saying, 'We didn't think of it because we weren't looking at the rules hard enough'."

Renault boss Flavio Briatore has accused all three teams of breaking the rules. He said: "It looks like there are two sets of regulations: the one that allows some teams to have the diffuser built in a certain way that is forbidden to others because it's considered illegal.

"At least three teams don't respect the regulations." Race director Charlie Whiting has already given Toyota and Williams' designs the all-clear and flew to Spain to examine Button's car during testing earlier this month

But FIA President Max Mosley said it is too late for them to make a ruling and told disgruntled teams they should lodge a postrace protest if they are unhappy.

F1 ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone is convinced the sport is in for a turbulent time. "Whoever is not happy is going to stick in a protest," he said.

Lewis Hamilton's team McLaren are among those who have missed out, but are thought to be working on a redesign of their car. A clever interpretation of the aerodynamic rules affecting the diffuser under the back of the car has created more speed and grip.

But the need to redesign the gearbox housing means it may not be on some cars until after the fourth race - if it proves legal.

Button was dealt a surprising second broadside yesterday on the eve of the race he is favourite to win by F1 legend John Surtees.

He claimed the talented Brawn racer should have been sacked for his lacklustre performances last season in a dog of a Honda.

"Sebastian Vettel is a good example of a real driver. Look at Button instead - frankly, I wouldn't have confirmed him with the team," said Surtees.

"If you don't give 100 per cent even when the car is not so good, you have to be sacked.

"You can't be good just when you have a good car but even when you don't."

    Go Button! :D

I would like to see Jenson up front with the leaders, who ever they are this year. For years i have heard him wining about his car. Now lets see if he can mix it with the heavy weights. It would be good to see.

I agree, looks like he might have the tools for the job this year. Lets see if he is up to it.

It's either ok or it's not WHY is there always this in between grey area bit!! why not or black and white, how hard can it be..

Let me guess, if Brawn run's away with it ..it will be deemed illegal, and that's the way Max and his pathetic side kicks like it, so he can mess with the result's..

So much for Charlie Whiting's view it means Jack ****, where Porno-Max is concerned ...SPA 08!!!!!!

They'll probably let it slide. The FIA and Bernie have been pushing for the 'little' teams to have a shot.

A good point, and one which I assume there has been nothing done about it as of now.

However if they blow the rest of the field away, which part of me want's to happen, believe me! sie vill be dragged and beaten down.

Steve, it is extremely difficult to write the regulations for something as complicated as the design of a car in such a way that is not open to interpretation. I think debate on what the regulations allow and don't allow is virtually inevitable and I certainly wouldn't jump to the conclusion that the FIA has a particular agenda as far as this issue is concerned.

Ok Ian, I admit I'am maybe toooo quick to blame Max, but surely you can forgive me for thinking it..;)

I really like F1 because *at the min* the teams are allowed some interpretation, it should be encouraged along with innovation, I would hate Max/Bernie to use this as a tool to even the playing field out for the sake of the show, if someone get's a good idea, within reason they should be allowed to exploit it, till by whatever means, we know the others will duplicate and catch up..all IMHO.

    +1

Especially with so many rule changes this year, there inevitably had to be some loopholes or grey areas that no one thought of beforehand.

If Brawn runs away from the field, how long do you think it will be before Ferrari and McLaren catch up. Presumably if they are complaining about the design of the defusers, they have seen them...why not just copy the idea as soon as possible and be done with the whining??

Can someone tell us what the difference is with the new rear diffuser compared to the older diffuser?

Were not talking about something small here, there are quite a few complaining about it, Luca for one, Max and Bernie have stated there will be trouble...yet in there infinite wisdom care to do nothing till after the race, what are we supposed think!!, it sounds a bloody shambles to me.
Or should I should drop my expectations that F1 is the pinnicale of motorsport, if they can't decide on what's allowed and what's not then.

If it actually IS against the rules, they have to change it. But I fully agree with you that clarification is needed BEFORE the racing starts.
