Reading many of the posts on these boards there is an ongoing separation between "young guys" and more "mature" "experianed" guys. So I was wondering as I approach my 10th anniversary of my 30th birthday and wish to celebrate by fulfilling one of my life's dreams/goals of owning a Ferrari, what age were you when you acquired your FIRST FCar. I said first since many here have had several. I will not answer the poll above untill I have keys and title in hand, so only answer if you own/owned one.
I bought a 348 when I was 36, and and a 360 when I was (and still am!) 37. No regrets in buying an F-car.
My father passed away on my 40th birthday, and while not a financial windfall it was motivation to pursue my dreams in life without compromise.... So within a year, I owned my first Ferrari, was divorced, and made other severe lifestyle changes, racing for charity and living every day to the max... Now, I scare the He11 out of everybody......LOL! So, be careful what you wish for..........
246 Dino gt at 23. The first one with the name "Ferrari" on the back was a 308 GTB at 27. Both were complete beaters but at least the 308 was running!
1968 365GT2+2 when I was 37 When he was 24, my father bought a derelict 1955 Ferrari 500 Mondial for $2300. As of this May 10, he will have owned it for 49 years.
My guess is the results thus far have more to do with how many guys in those age groups monitor FerrariChat, or are even computer literate? This will naturally skew the replies to younger sectors.
I don't think that's true at all. If I were to have guessed, I would say the largest group of first time buyers were between 30 and 49 --and that seems to be what the chart is showing.
Made bet with High School classmate we'd both have Ferrari's before 40...graduated 1988, attended 20th reunion last November, turns out my buddy went for a Cobra replica (which is strange since his father repairs Alfa's and he had one in HS)...2 months later I purchased my first, a 360, at age 38.
I realized I wanted own a Ferrari when I was 11 years old and by the time I was 16, I knew I would have one. I bought my first (355) at the age of 27.
I don't know for you guys but I'll finish my MBA at 24 (now I'm 22). Then I have to work at least two years in an accounting firm to get my title. So by then I'll be 26 and quite far away from buying a F-car. So I'm just wondering how you guys bought it under 29. I guess wealthy family, started a business instead of going to university (wich is very respectable!), got out of harvard (you got great salary going out of there!) and the list goes on. One thing is for sure, I'll work as hard as I can, playing hard too along the way (you got to enjoy life too) and one day I'll buy it ! Until then, you guys enjoy it! You sure worked hard to get those babies ! Drive them like they're meant to! Have a nice day !
Twenty-eight for me while I was a 1st Lt in the AF. Three year old Dino 246GT. $10,600. Should have gotten Kirk White's 250 LM for $9800 instead. Neither had air-conditioning, so would not have made much difference. Could have worked on the LM without having to take off the right rear wheel and wheel well cover, too. If only. Dog clutch transmission much more fun, too. Would probably still have it. Taz Terry Phillips
I promissed myself a TR by 30.... (88' grad....aka Miami Vice syndrom) got a nice 308 @ 30. Have learned a lot, and will have a TR some day. Just glad I cut my teeth on a 3 series.
Let me tell you, I didn't come from a wealthy family at all. My dad bought our home for 14 grand and he only owned used cars (always American Motors because they were cheap). My mom worked. I worked through high school and every day when going to university. It took me 5 years instead of 4 because I couldn't take as many courses due to work. I lived at home the entire time and saved everything I could. I got lucky at my job and got into a important project. I worked my butt off for a year and they gave me a surprise bonus of 3 grand. With that and what I had saved, it was just enough for me to start to look. One day when a car came available that few would have wasted their time on, I snatched it. I restored it over a couple of years with the help of friends. My folks thought I was nuts. My dad did like driving it though. It can be done. There was no way in the world I could afford to buy a brand new 308 at the time but I did end with a really fine Dino. There are still great deals on 308 gt-4's and even some beater 308 gtb/s out there. Even some 348's are not much differently priced than a typical SUV these days. And, despite what you may think, they are not that difficult to work on yourself if you have to. SO, to answer your question: I was not wealthy and I did go to university instead of starting a business. But, you do have to work hard, invest well, look around at what you can afford, sacrifice and compromise, and stay focused. It is NEVER easy but VERY rewarding. Oh, keep your driving record clean and your credit good because even if you can afford to buy one, you still have to insure it and most likely finance it. Insurance is the hidden cost of these cars for those under 30.
