Im glad everyone is so interested in the screws I used for the crates LOL :) Thanks William!
It did kinda take on a life of its own, didn't it! Hard to imagine a bunch of car guys talking about screws (pun intended), go figure...
I recieved 2 of the carriers and told Paul I would get back and let him know what I think. Today I just finished installing one in a TR transaxle. I am no machinist but I do know how to measure things and am well equipped to do so. I took very extensive measurements of both the original unit I removed and the new unit Paul supplied. Of particular interest to me was any possible displacement of either the bearings or ring gear after assembly. In either case it would complicate the job. I was very pleased that very good tolerences were held. In either case the differences were on the order of just a couple of tenths, meaning ten thousandths of an inch (.0002-.0004). That is not only good machine work but with available shims you cannot adjust things to that small of a degree. The real importance of this to everyone who installs one in a good working existing transaxle is that if your bearing preload and ring gear backlash was in spec when you took it apart it should stay that way going back together. I installed the new carrier with new bearings and no ring gear to better be able to check bearing preload and it was great first try. Then I fully assembled the carrier and installed it and found the backlash to be on the tight side of good which with an aluminum housing is right were I like them to be. Over all I am very pleased. I did use genuine Timkin bearings which is what OE was and I used the updated high strength ring gear bolts which require a different installation program. I would suggest both be done. There are 2 different bolts available depending on whether you have a 10x1.0 or 10x1.25 ring gear thread.
Thanks Brain, The machince shop (starboy444 on this site) has to take the credit for such accurate machining. His facility is top notch and he's a great guy to work with. He also put up with my very particular demands which bordered on abuse and harassment lol! If you get a chance maybe have John post some pics if possible. Im sure we would all love to see the progress of his killer boxer! thanks for posting your impressions. Paul.
Some current pictures for those who ordered one. These pics are from saturday so more progress has been made since. I think I actually get one for my boxer this time! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks Mark, I could make you one in Ti if you like and you can put it on your mantle as a candle holder until you get a TR! Here are some current pics, off to the heat treater either tomorrow or monday then finish grinding. I had an additional one made so if anyone is interested I have that one available.
