It's a Satellite tracking and emergency system called the SPOT : http://www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=1110

I never win anything.....so thrilled. Would normally cost about $150-300 depending on add ons.

I plan to activate it for about $99/year, then the optional $50 for google realtime map tracking.

Would have been cool to give to son, but he got back from Iraq last week [will see his baby girl for first time next month].

However, Sister-in-law going over soon and will give to her.

You can punch a button that will trigger a series of emails or phone calls to give a standardized message to selected entities/family members letting them know 'your ok' or whatever. A '911' button for emergency help, and the google feature is real time tracking to google maps to let us know where they are.

Although, I would have been drummed out of the service for having one on station, I'm betting in the olden days, I've know a few in Iraq and Afgan to have Satellite phones and such...so, will see what can be done.

You must go to different fairs than any I've ever seen.

Pretty neat gadget, but the iphone does pretty much the same thing.
Also, I don't think it will work in SWA.

Spot will work in places that the iPhone would be nothing more than extra weight in your pocket. Definitely not apples to apples, here.

    No clue what SWA is?

This SPOT works on both poles and anywhere. For an extra $7/year = premium on extra insurance up to $100,000 to charter Helos etc. to rescue someone, albeint I'm sure there is a non-conflict clause.

Only negatives I've heard since yesterday is when like down a deep canyon or well like Myan they said or some parts of the Grand Canyon, but honestly if you have a shot at the sky....shouldn't be a problem

Will post some other stuff...we are activating it today...will give updates

Ok, thanks. As Rik mentioned, Spot works anywhere you have a clear view of the sky because Spot utilizes satellites.
