I would like to get my wife a nice coffee maker for her birthday. I was looking at a Dacor, but it is a built in unit. I would like to have it portable as we live out of our motor coach part of the year. Price range? Up to $1,000, but $500 would be nicer. The ability to do espresso etc would be a nice benefit.

If you make a lot of coffee, why not a Restaurant/Industrial-grade BUNN unit with top warming plate? $500 for a coffee machine that will last DECADES, and can be rigged with a filtered water-feed so you don't have to run to the sink every time you want to fill it.

Michael is right. Even my wife cannot break our Bunn, and she was going through a Braun etc every year. We did not bother with the water hook-up since my wife likes to use bottled water in hers. There are a wide number of models and you can fix it yourself if anything goes wrong. Nothing has in five or six years on ours.

A man's taste in coffee varies as much as his taste in women. There is no single "right" answer, so I will provide my experiences and opinions.

The best machine I came across is an old Krups espresso/coffee maker. I use the espresso maker only, since it is the best way IMHO to extract flavor from the beans. Do NOT utilize the heating pad! Warming the brew only evaporates the water and sours the oils. Make a new pot each time, or use the espresso maker for single servings.

Keurig, Tassimo and Senseo are jokes!!!

I think that most certainly is the case. The vacuum units look really nifty, but the descriptions of the taste don't seem to mesh with what I prefer. I don't drink a whole lot of coffee, but quite like espresso. For "normal" coffee, I've always been partial to that made in a French press or just a good old percolator.

Thank you all for the responses. My wife is the only coffee drinker in the house, so quantity isn't the issue. Quality of the brew and maker is the most important. Thanks again for all of the information!

I have the Cuisinart Grind and Brew 900BC and really like it. It makes a great cup of coffee. And it's less than $200.

    http://www.cuisinart.com/catalog/product.php?product_id=514&item_id=626&cat_id=3

It's got a burr grinder for the beans and a thermal carafe to keep the coffee hot after you brew it (without being ruined by a heating element - just fill the carafe with hot water for a minute before you make the coffee and it stays hot for a couple hours.)

I've been very pleased with it in the ~18 months I've had it.

Some of the drip machines here are pretty cool but I can not stand a SS carafe. I hate to not be able to see how much coffee is left and then find I only have a half cup in the pot....

We had that one and the hotplate went out after 5-6 months. We got this Kitchenaid and it works great.....

Brews a pot in very short order and pours nicely.

I don't want to steal the OP's thread, but have a question about coffee makers myself.

I'm looking for a decent drip maker for no more than $50-$60? I would prefer a 4-6 cup maker but it's not be all end all if it's not.

Darth, Doc- My wife would break those in a year. All she can break on the Bunn is the urns and coffee basket, and I have extras of those. She even broke the stainless steel urn for the Bunn. That takes talent.

Lots of Office coffee supply co's only use Bunn. They are great for heavy use. I had a home unit around that lasted 10 years. All I had to do was clean the waterline every so often with a spring thingie.

OK Doc, I have to admit all she did was break the lid. Makes for a good war story, though. Especially since she weighs 115 lbs on a bad day. The part about trashing Braun, Krups, Mr Coffee, etc in a year is definitely not exaggerated.

This is the unit I have in my kitchen - its great! I couldn't find a local restaurant supply store, I consider this the next-best thing to a BUNN.

I wish they would make a decent coffee maker than loads from the front. I hate sliding the thing out every time I want to put water in the back. DeLonghi makes one with a front loading water & grounds tray, but it got bad reviews.

    Thanks.

One of my co-workers may give me her coffee maker. She said she has a spare one that was given as a wedding gift and it's never been opened and I could have it for free. I can't pass that up.
