    Hi All,

I am a student studying industrial design at The Art Institute of Orange County and just completed a project. I am 4th quarter (12 in all) and designed a Ferrari Themed knife. (A non functioning knife. Its a mockup) It is based off a Ferrari F1 Vehicle and Ferrari Enzo. After looking at it for a while, I begin to see some of the 333SP in the LED lights on the F1 side. It is an asymetrical box cutter that is now being displayed in the school.

    The Features:

-Retractable Box Cutter (that conforms to the right hand. Sorry Lefties)

-LED flashlight to open boxes at night

-Laser Level near the front blade

-Notched front grip for precision cutting

    -Keychain friendly

    -Waterproof

    -Dominant Ferrari Emblem

The Process starts with dense foamcore. Then that foamcore is lathered with Metalglaze and sanded to smoothness. No mess of Bondo here! It then is placed in a wooden box which silicone is poured into and then hardens. I then cut the silicone (when dry and take out my foam knife) and the end result is a perfect cast of the original carving. After the mold is out, I tightly wrap rubber bands and seal the cut areas and leaving a 1/4 inch hole at the top to pour in fastcast (I forgot the technical name for the material). It then gets hard and is an exact mold of my original foam piece. Then comes sanding for imperfections then painting. I screwed up a few times and resanded (painstakingly) and re-did it. It came out good, but not as good as I wanted since I had 2 separate brands of paint/clearcoat.

NOTE: Never mix brands. Lesson learned the hardway.

So the paint came out okay. It is all Rattle can Rustoleum spray painted. Next came detailing. The blade is cut and epoxied in the slot and clear LEDS glued in their designated holes. The Ferrari Emblem is printed on fine gloss paper and spray glued on the handle.

The end result: I think it came out okay, but could have been better. I only had 1 week to do it and it was all during finals time, which pretty much bottle necks towards the end. Let me know what you guys think! I know its not exactly precision work, but its not that bad for a beginner's mockup.

NOTE: I uploaded the pictures in reverse order on accident.

Well, it was made asymetrical and I am a righty, and I could only make one project. So it had to be a righty...since most people are righties. If I was to ever mass produce it and sell it, of course i'd tap the market for left handers haha..more $.

But its a concept for my model making class. Its not that bad for my portfolio as a designer either!

Don't take this the wrong way, but I'd wait for something else to fill the portfolio. I would do some 3D visualizations of a cocktail glass before I would ever do something like a box cutter. Think of the person who will be hiring you - they are probably into fine stemware, briefcases, pens, wallets, sunglasses, etc.
