Has anyone tried using the Ametech Engine Restore oil additive in their V12 motors? I ask because I am tempted to use it, esp if it will ease the smoking from my carb car under acceleration; it's a tad embarrassing in this anti-car society we call Great Britain.

    Regards, Ray.

Are you sure the problem is rings/cylinders which is all the Restore will help? Since you have a carb car, can it be rich on acceleration. Is smoke blue or black? How do plugs look? What does it do on start up after sitting for a week? Valve seals/guide can be an issue. (I never checked if the 400 motor uses valve seals, if not guides can be an issue on start up.)

I have used Restore on other cars with high miles and never found it did much.

Thanks for your comments Ken. The smoke appears to be mostly when cold and under hard-ish acceleration; it is either grey (when cold) or grey/black. I find it hard to tell if the car is running rich as there is always the smell of unburnt hydrocarbons behind the car - having noted the same behind most such fuelled cars I have come across, I assume it to be a natural byproduct of having 6 webers! The car will be having a major service, inc valve and carb adjustment fairly soon, so I may find out then if it's just a fuelling issue. That said, I did try some other oil additive which does seem to have cut down the amount of smoke produced, if not cut it out completely.

    Regards, Ray.

Checking the spark plugs can give you an idea of fuel mixture as well as other potential problems: Black and dry is too rich fuel mixture, black and oily is burning oil (rings or valves), very light gray or white is too lean fuel mix. Ideal condition is sort of a light to medium tan.

This seems like an overly rich mixture to me. Perhaps chokes on too long. Black smoke is unburnt fuel.
Oil smoke will be blueish white and smell like burning oil. Oil smoke on hard acceleration is usually rings, smoke on accelerating after coasting is usually from the valve guides.
Overhauls in a bottle are a waste of money. I've tried these in some old beaters with no improvement. I'd never put the stuff in an expensive engine.

Thanks for your comments guys; my mechanic says the same, so I'll give it a miss and wait for the outcome of the service - I expect that it's just running too rich as the engine needs hardly any oil.

    Best Regards, Ray.
