What car would have a 42mm spinner, engraved horse with an arrow but no word "off" in the arrow? Also is wire different from alloy in application? Thanks
Certainly the Daytona would have carried the spinner (knockoff) as you describe, in addition to those with the word "off". Probably C/4 as well US cars would have had an octagonal "knockoff" which required a large adapter to be removed. IF I understand your question, standard wire wheels and alloy wheels use same knockoff. Wider wire wheels and alloy wheels may require a different deeper knockoff.
Thanks but its still confusing. The ferrari original boxer spinner has an embossed horse and arrow. Its stamped not engraved. The replacement spinners from ferrari are engraved and have the arrow with "off" in it. The spinners im curious about have an engraved horse, no "off" in the arrow. Im not sure if any older cars had engraved spinners or if all newer ones were. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I don't think the spinners change when the width of the rim changes, except for the different spinners used on some race-applications. The hubs are pretty much a uniform thing. A spinner suits a certain hub, 32, 42, 52mm and then of course L/H and R/H. I can't answer where the spinner belongs, but also bear in mind that there are replica spinners on the market, which may have small differences from the originals. Embossed? I'd think these are cast items, so the cavallino would be cast into/onto the spinner. (if not engraved) Man these things are beautiful! I'd love to have centre-lock wheels on my 308! Makes me think....would Boxer hubs fit...
My 1973 Daytona, came with the engraved spinners, and i have since bought a set of the embossed type. I don't know what was original but i guess it was the engraved ones, for my car. You do need different spinners if you have the 9 inch rear wheels, as the wheels are deeper dished, the lugs stick out more on these spinners, so you can hit them with the lead mallet more easily. For those interested,I,ve just had a tool made(for my 365GT4 but I,m getting one made for the 330 as well) that depletes the need for smashing any part of your Ferrari with a lead mallet.Indeed you only need a socket bar and you can even torque them with a tension wrench.I,m going to the Ferrari nationals in Toowoomba(Qld,Aussie)in September to see if any other owners are like minded. The tool is as big as your spinner, will probably have a 3/4 drive socket hole and will probably come with a 1/2to 3/4 reducer extension. The costing is not final but will probably come in at/under $200 Aussie. The tool encompases the spinner giving grip on all parts of the ear.A mallet is the crudest part of any knock on spinner vehicle as most of you have found out.I know there are other tools on the market at about 200-400 euros but they don,t fit like a glove.Cheers,Simon.
TS will know the answer for sure! TS?? I know that some replica spinners were produced that were not spot on for an original. I think that the 42 mm spinner was on many of the 2+2's (bigger heavier cars).
There is a thread here some years ago which I contributed a bit where we went through this, and as all things Ferrari, there are no fixed rules, at a National Meet BrianP was dinged for having straight eared knock offs on his alloys (in fact they were correct) and another car was passed with bent ears (not so for that model). If its not here, its on Tom Yang's, you can also check Kerry, he has the Borrani catalog which helps a lot.
One of the old time tricks was to cast your own soft lead hammer around a handle using a cardboard large frozen orange juice container as the mold. The soft lead prevented damaging the knock-offs. They did not last very long, but a new one was easy to cast and most of the lead from the old hammer was reused. Casting was done in a well-ventilated room, probably an outdoor grill would be ideal. As you no doubt surmised, one use per orange juice container, since it was cut off the hammer head. Taz Terry Phillips

Mine is simillar but different.made out of mild steel(at the moment). These look a little fragile(probably are,nt) .Will try to put pic on here...see what you think
Hill Eng. in the UK make these for the Daytona, and this guy is selling them on e-bay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FERRARI-365-512BOXER-DAYTONA-WHEEL-SPINNER-SPECIAL-TOOL_W0QQitemZ370180460770QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item370180460770&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 I have one, but have not tried it yet as my car is in bits, but it looks like, a very well engineered piece of kit
G,day Grant, yes I,ve seen those check out the price though.Although we have the most exciting cars made we shouldn,t have to pay a premium price if we don,t have to.That thing is the equivalent of $500Aussie,my proposed price is probably closer to 1/2 that and has more contact with the ears of the spinner more will be revealed if I can get a pic on here.
